Disable popup "Do you want to scan and fix remov.device""? 2 methods?

When I plugin an external USB hard disc or USB stick it appears that Windows 7 pops up a dialog window asking me:

"Do you want to scan and fix removable disc?"

After reading a while in Internet I saw two methods for disabling these popups:

1.) Disabling service "Shell Hardware detection"

2.) enabling "Turn off Autoplay" in gpedit.msc

Whats the difference?

I want be sure that if I plugin a new USB device (like an USB stick or USB printer or USB hard disc) this USB hardware IS successfuly detected and joined by Windows 7.

So I can imagine that the first method is too brutal because it prevents inclusion of new USB devices

Is this correct?

If yes: Why is it recommended so often for avoiding the popup?

You get that message because Windows detects something wrong with the file system on the device. This can happen if the device was unplugged without "Safely Removing Hardware", and a transfer was not complete.

The methods you mention just mask the problem.

You can let Windows scan and fix the drive, choose: fix file system errors.
or, do a full format on the drive, not the quick format.
Or, run Chkdsk /f X: manually, X = the problem drive letter, you may have to run it more than once.

It is always a good idea to move all data off the drive first, then copy it back after the fix is complete. This also fixes bad file problems that can contribute to the error.

The drive probably has it's "Dirty Bit" set. This is a single Hex value that tells Windows the file system is no good. Chkdsk and formatting will often reset the dirty bit, but sometimes not on the first attempt.

To see if the dirty bit is set:
Open a command prompt > Start > type: cmd > right-click on Command Prompt and choose “Run as administrator”
and then type:
[FONT=&quot] fsutil dirty query x: [/FONT]
(substitute the letter "x" with the drive letter that is giving you problems)

If the dirty bit is set you will get a message that "Volume X is DIRTY".

Keep running chkdsk /r , or chkdsk /f /r until the dirty bit clears.

At Empty SDcard Brand New Kingston FAT32 Formatted and also at USB Stick
I figured out and can Reproduce the Dirty Bit at 0x41 at BootSector is Set
when create single and first new empty txt file at the SDcard use defaut name suggested
when change default file name of new empty txt file to something dssfdsf.txt
the DirtyBit remains Clear (NICE)

--Perform new file create by right click and choose new txt file or new bmp file or any file
next use WinHEX to view the Dirty Bit and clear it,
next perform again create new empty txt or any file the DirtyBit remains clear (NICE)
but at the fourth new file create the DirtyBit become Set once again

--Perform edit txt through notepad and save file by notepad can trigger the DirtyBit to be Set


Can someone forward this msg to Microsoft? there must be a bug the un documented DirtyBit
is Set to soon the should perform a verfiy before Set to 0x01 or and fix improve new file create of Windows7 i certain know this behaviour was not seen at windows xp

Can someone reproduce this by using FAT32 SDcard or and FAT32 USB stick

I seen this behaviour only at removeable media through USB the SATA os disk or other SATA disk the DirtyBit remains clear after new file create and use the suggested default new file create name


Microsoft must fix this and tripple verify before set the un documented DirtyBit 0x41

Okay this is my 2 Cent for about the Dirty Bit Set i think many post here about this 0x41 DirtyBit is related to my finding, I Will go figure out how to reach MS about this, I am a Hobiest no employee
