"Do you want to scan and fix (external storage device)?" Why?

Hi guys.
I have a bunch of external storage devices - flash drives, HDD, SSD, SD cards, Micro SD (you get the picture). I have 4 computers running Windows XP, 7, and 10. I know XP is ancient but so is the netbook it is installed on. Did you know that Microsoft technicians are instructed to run XP on their machines because they consider it to be most stable? I didn't know that until one night I was on the phone with tech support and we had to wait for Windows to reinstall and got to chatting. Just a bit of trivia.

Every time I insert one of my storage devices it asks me if I want to scan and fix it. But there is nothing wrong with them. They read fine, you can write to them fine, speeds seem normal, no missing or corrupted files, nothing seems off about them. This has been happening for years. I have even formatted some of the drives and by the second time I plug one in it is asking me again.

I looked up how to turn it off and found a howtogeek tutorial so I should have that taken care of soon.

What I really want to know is why is this happening? And is there possibly a way to turn off that message without disabling my autoplay?

Thanks for listening

Ok well I run Kaspersky and it is set to pop up a message like that and when I know the external is ok I just uncheck that message.

I can if I want set Kaspersky to not do that but I find it a "comfort" in a way that it does in case I do connect something that I do not know about.

So has your AV got a similar setting to do that??

This one has been around for a looong time. The answer is easy but most people never give it a thought.

Windows assigns a drive letter to all of those storeage devices when they are mounted. That designation is written to the device (if a writable device). When a removable device is unmounted and then remounted Windows reads the drive designation from the device...

BUT the next available drive letter for your Windows may not be the same as what was last written to the device, thus Windows throws the error message. As you have seen when you run the check, there are no physical or sector type errors. What the check doesn't tell you is the initial drive letter designation mismatch...Windows just fixes it in the background and off you go with no problem.

You can verify this for yourself with a drive manager program, a couple different removable drive, and manually assigning drive letters to them...about 20 minutes of mucking around should convince you.

As for what to do about it? One thing that has worked for me if to manually assign a low drive letter to each removable device using your favorite drive manager program. I usually assign drive letter "R" to each of them, sometimes I use "Z". I do this because I have four physical hard drives in one of my computers and each has three or four partitions, plus one floppy drive and two optical drives - you can see where this is going with assigned drive letters.

Personally, I would just click Cancel as Windows will reassign the next available drive letter and move on.

As to turning off the drive check, you can't as it is a part of the OS - it must be there to avoid collisions.

Regards,
GEWB

I agree with GEWB except that I never use driver softwares unless I really have to and then in desperation.
