Every time I connect to my ethernet, windows 7 will NOT disable the wifi. Is it a driver issue or what?

I don't think it's a driver issue, but just how windows works. Every laptop I've had does that.

Use the proper key to turn it off. If you have your wireless set to automatically connect, that`s what it`s gonna do.

There should be a key on the keyboard ( sometimes has a pic of an antenna ) or a button somewhere. Usually newer laptops will have a blue light when it`s on and a amber light when it`s off.

There are many video reviews of the XPS 17 on youtube.

Windows already automatically uses the wired connection when it is connected.
You do not have to turn off the wireless to do that.

When you connect your ethernet cable and you are already connected wirelessly, the network icon in the bottom right is still gonna show the bar graph. Right click on the network icon and open network and sharing center. Click on connect or disconnect and then right click on your network and disconnect.

Or just left click on the network icon and disconnect from your wireless network.

It is fine to leave the wireless on when you hard wire, you will be getting 100 Mbs.

Windows already automatically uses the wired connection when it is connected.

This isn't completely true. Windows has no control over how other systems connect to a multi-homed computer. On a laptop with both wifi and wired networking, incoming connections for remote desktop sessions or network file transfers could reach either the wifi connection or the wired connection.

If you're leave a laptop connected via a wired network with the intention of connecting to it from another computer, you should disable the wifi adapter to make sure your connection goes over the (much faster) wired connection.

I could be wrong - but as I understand it, the ability for one operating system to combine the bandwidth of more than one network interface card at a time requires software/drivers that will merge the data streams and the cooperation of the hardware (router) that the NICs are connected to.

However, you can have several Virtual Machines running at the same time - each using a different NIC.

I don't know how you checked this but if you open Task Manager and click the Networking tab you can see which adaptor Windows is using.

If it truly does perfer to use your Wireless I found some info here that will help, Windows 7 - Why is the Network Adapter Priority ignored while - Microsoft Answers, in the post marked Answer at the top.

The only thing is there are two Metric settings one at the bottom and one under Default Gateways. If both adaptors are assigned Gateways then this will be the one that controls internet access, the one at the bottom most likly controls other network access like connecting to another computer.

Obviously if only one has a Gateway assigned then it will be the only one that can access the internet.

EDIT: Don't know how this will go disconnecting/reconnecting the cable. Whether or not it will retain the setting, mainly when using DHCP I would think static IP's should be ok.

timlab1955,
When you make it back to this thread - please try this:

Go into device manager*
find and double click on the entry for your wireless NIC
click on the tab named Advanced
see if you can find "Disable Upon Wireless Connect" in the list of properties

NIC.JPG

Edit:
*To open device manager, type devmgmt.msc into Start's search field and press enter.
