Solved Disk Check Won't Run

Uninstalling the Service Pack will not have any effect on documents and installed software, correct?
yes it won't have any effect on documents and software. It makes a "restore point" anyway before uninstalling.

Please post progress.

The service pack is in the process of uninstalling. I will let you know if the problem is solved once I get an opportunity to reinstall it, but I may not be able to do so until tomorrow.

In addition, something to keep in mind:

Is this factory preinstalled Win7 which is the worst possible install one can have of Win7, larded with bloatware and useless duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7?

Most tech enthusiasts will not run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything is provided in the blue link tutorial.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

If this doesn't resolve performance problems, work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

To repair the problem permanently:
  1. uninstall SP1: How to uninstall Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  2. check for updates. Service Pack 1 will be in the list. Install it (it has a fresh autochk.exe in it)
  3. Install other updates as well. But this can be done later!
Above procedure will only work if you installed SP1 on the machine. So not if you installed WIN7 with SP1 already included.

When SP1 has been reinstalled:
  • sfc/scannow : no more errors?
  • chkdsk works?

The check disk tool ran successfully after I uninstalled Service Pack 1, but as soon as I reinstalled it the situation reverted back to where it started, with check disk refusing to run.

However, running a disk check from the advanced boot options command line works just fine. It's not ideal to have to run it this way, but it's easy enough to do and I don't need to run disk checks terribly often, so it's a good enough solution for me. I'll go ahead and mark the thread as solved.

Thanks again for your help and for teaching me a thing or two. Take care.

So uninstall SP1....all is fine.
Install SP1.... chckdsk doesn't start on boot do to autochk problems.
Sure SP1 did break it? If so... then it's broken a long time

I hope there are no other problems that cause this install error

You can simply do:
Code:
chkdsk c:
So without the /f switch. It will just check for errors and can be done without reboot! Close all programs before checking. Most of the time it will finish saying "no disk errors found" or something like that. If it reports errors it can be a coincidence because something was accessing the disk.

You can try it now
