Disk clean up windows.old

So I just successfully did a custom download to Windows 7 64 bit from Windows Vista 32 bit.

I'm trying to delete the windows.old folder but when I use the disk cleanup default application Windows 7 gives you (cleanmgr) no where in the list does it show old windows files. So why can't I delete them from disk clean up? Is there any way to make it so I can?

Also I've already downloaded many things on my computer since I got Windows 7 up and running again and I hope when I do a disk cleanup and delete the windows.old folder it won't also delete the new programs I've just installed.

I'm not entirely sure but I just deleted my Windows.old folder and it worked fine. I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do though so wait for another member's say-so before trying it.

Did you try all 3 options ? How about reading the tutorial one more time, like you did before you did the Custom Install ?

Yeah I was looking at that tutorial. No I haven't tried the other three options, I was just puzzled with why it wasn't showing up with disk clean up.

I'll check out the other options

You can run disk cleanup with the sageset switch. In the run box, type

cleanmgr /sageset:1

(1 is an arbitrary number).

That'll launch disk cleanup and you can select categories of files you want to delete.

I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do

It is not a matter of right or wrong, good or bad. It is more a matter of timing.

It is not a good idea to burn your "restore" bridges immediately after updating. But certainly, after you have used the updated system for a few days, and you feel certain there will be no need to roll-back to previous versions, then it is perfectly safe to delete the old files, and free up a nice chunk of disk space.
