Hi All,
My first time posting here. Been reading the Win7 forums for awhile now and have learned alot about Win7. Formally Xp user. I use Win7 about 99% of the time now.
I hope some one smarter than me can help. When try to do a clean up of my hard disk with the win7 Disk Clean Up utility--it will start up but will not run. I click on either c or d to cleanup and it just shut down. No error msgs. It used to work just fine. The prob started yesterday. The only changes to my pc I made was to unintall Office 2010 beta. That when I notice it would not run. I have never had this problem before. I have tryied the repair disc, tyied defrag. Also check online and on the forum but cant find a solution. I hope someone can help.
I know there are 3rd party utility for disk clean up, I just want my win7 to work like it should. By the great forum......sorry this is so long.

Did you do upgrades since the betas when SP1 was around and you had that? That could cause it.

If not, from an elevated command prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Hi, thanks for the fast response. I should of said I so have the full retail version on win7. Never used betas. I did not know there is a sp1 for win7 yet. I have my pc set to rcv udates automaticly. Latest udate was 11/27/09. Are u telling me that maybe the udate cause this prob. I will try the sfc /scannow.

Could be many reasons. If sfc doesn't fix it, CCleaner is a great alternative and perhaps better. I think it is. More comprehensive.

You're welcome.

Still have same prob (cant run disk clean up) SFC showed no errors or probs. I will keep checking here for more solutions (if any). I will also try find solutions too-mainly because I am stubborn and want my pc running as like is was disigned to. I will use ccleaner as it is a great app. I used it for years on my xp with no problems. Thank you for you help torrentg.

Very welcome. I understand where you're coming from. I;m the same way and want things to work correctly always if possible.

Since you uninstalled Office, if it left over a folder at the root of the HDD called MSOCache, delete the manually.

Then try to run the disk cleanup and see if it works.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know I found a solution and all seems to work know. Here is solution.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress Old Files

I could not find anything that was Compress Old Files---but after VolumeCaches it had something to due with office (cant remember exactly what---shud of wrote it down). After I did that the Disk Cleanup utility works like it shoud. And so far no other problem.
Again thanks for your help. I hope this helps someone else that has the same problems.
Regards everyone.

Oh yea could not find MSOcache in search.......
