Disk Defragmenter Issue

I run the Windows 7 Disk Defragmenter once every 2 weeks. When I analyzed the hard-disk this time, it came back 0% fragmented. I thought that was odd considering how much disk activity had occurred lately, so I downloaded Piriform's Defraggler (the newest 64-bit version) and ran that. It came back with a reading of 19%. I let it defrag until it was 25% complete, then stopped it (I had to leave). When I came back and ran the analyze disk again (via Defraggler), it read 22% fragmented - I had also lost disk space (from 809 to 804 GB). I closed down Defraggler and ran the Windows 7 Defragmenter again, which then reported a 1% fragmentation.

My hard-disk is only a month old (model info. is in my profile).

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated it.

I'm no expert with defraggers but each program has its own thoughts on measuring what is fragmented. If they were did it the same way their wouldn't be any sales. I have tried a few others and still come back to the simple Windows version. I'm sure you can find fancy ones with color graphs and such but for me I just like it simple with no fluff.

The 3rd party defrag tools analyze defragmentation different from Windows. Defraggler is a good program (unless you have an SSD) It will do a fine job. Use it and you will be happy. Windows will do an "adequate" job if you want to stick with it, but others are made differently. They look at smaller file sizes I believe.

The built in defragmenter is sufficient, unless as has been mentioned, you have an SSD. I run it weekly.

I don't hardly ever run a defrag utility and haven't in years. I've never noticed any perceivable difference from running a defrag...and i've used the built-in tools, 3rd party tools, etc.

.
Defraggers use different schemes for arranging the data along with actually defragging the files so it's best to stay with one product (and let it complete once it's started). My personal choice is PerfectDisk because I like having a data map and it does a good job with system files (boot time defrag). As far as performance though I think as long as you run any one of them on a regular basis you will keep fragmentation under control. Performance does suffer eventually if fragmentation gets bad enough, especially if free space gets low.

First run ChkDsk.exe. This is imperative.

Now let Defraggler run and do not interrupt - let it run to completion.

Personally, I use CONTIG.EXE in the SysInternalsSuite.

Defrag before chkdsk, the files should be defragged before a surface analysis.

Windows Seven has a defragement program designed specificaly for Seven. It has been discussed several times about using 3rd party defrags and the overall general opinion is to not use them. I usually will defrag the first time after a clean install and all my programs I want have been installed. Then pending on usage and installed and uninstalled programs, I will maybe use it once evey 2-4 weeks. But that's just me. fabe

Always run a chkdsk first!. Attempts to defrag a problematic disk will only make bad matters worse. Check with such people as GRC.com (Steve Gibson is the author of SPINRITE which is a marvelous disk checker/restorer/and more.)

If there is still doubt in your mind, then I recommend going to the websites of the various hard disk manufacturers.

Correct! Logic tells you that if there is a problem with the MFT or any FAT-related problems - a defrag may not even be ABLE to run to completion.

I met Steve Gibson years ago and while he may seem a little alarmist, he really knows what he is talking about. Spinrite is an excellent program and well worth the money.

As to which defragger to use - I have found Ultimate Defrag to be without peer. Best display of fragmentation status ever.

That's my preference too.

This sound crazy but I:

Start > CMD > CD C:/ > Contig -v

Enter,

????

Profit.

Takes forever (750 Gbs)

Do this weekly and I have a healthy baby PC :)
