Solved display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Hello everyone!

Recently I have been getting the above mentioned error message.
This error happens mainly while playing World Of Warcraft however
it also appears to happen randomly while not on WoW. I have noticed
that if I set all of the video setting to their lowest the frequency
of the errors is reduced.

I am currently using the most up to date driver for my video card.
nvlddmkm 8.17.13.142 ForceWare 301.42

All other drivers are up do date.

The video card is about 4 years old and I'm wondering
if this could be a sign that the card is going bad or is this
something that can be resolved without purchasing a new
card.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there-
Same thing happened to me on WOW with my four year old computer, did a lot of looking, and what I found was that it is a fairly generic message which covers a lot of ground. I finally decided it was the overheating of my graphics card, and had little to do with the drivers themselves.

I had originally replaced all the correct drivers, no change in the frequency of the message. I did get a newer graphics card and that did fix the problem. WOW really tears on graphics cards & CPU.

You might try downloading Process Explorer from Microsoft's Windows Sysinternals: Documentation, downloads and additional resources. When you run it, it shows all processes active and the amount of resources they use. It shows GPU activity as well as CPU, memory, I/O, etc. Might give you a hint as to how hard the graphics card is working.

I finally just built a new computer with Newegg parts about two months ago. I am a very happy camper now!

I just installed a GTX 550ti 2gb.

Initial results are good. hopefully this will resolve the issue.
