Video card has stopped responding but has recovered..

Makes me wonder why...

Ok great to hear things have settled. Well as for the return item it always is a pain as none of those sellers/dealers like doing it and when they do it is as slow as they can make it. Which as you say doesn't overly impress one to shop there again eh?

You're right about the stalling tactics! I was clearly within their 30 day time period to return something defective. So other than being deliberately slow they have no solid reason for the delay. I know I can always dispute the charge on my credit card and that way no one gets paid. I prefer to save that until last because I've used NewEgg for years and don't want to get on their $shit list by doing that.

Again many thanks the card is working perfectly! :D

That is good to hear JT and as Thrash Zone says you should have no concern when you are clearly in the right. I don't know if you have something similar over in the US but here we have state government department for Fair Trading and usually a mention about them puts the skids under sellers/dealers real quick;)

Don't know if I mentioned this before but have a look it is well worth following the linked tutorial.
Just a little something that will make your machine a little faster and more efficient is this Optimize Windows 7
It is my bible when installing an OS on my machines and also when I am fixing friends and family machines too.
Now if you go through it slowly you will find lots of tweaks and they are all really thoroughly done by the authour Brink a fellow who is in my mind brilliant and if you need to ask questions he is just the most obliging person around.
The other thing is that you may lose some of the "bling" such as transparency (you don't have to I find it unnecessary) and all the tweaks are reversible.
If you do get stuck just post back in that tutorial and you will get help. Another bonus using this tutorial is that it helps you find your way around your machine and Windows 7!
Just one tip I would say you start with is do this Registry - Backup and Restore do this and it will save you a lot of grief if you are ever doing things in the registry and even if you don't it is a good back up to have if your system ever gets corrupted.
(pretyped to save time)

ThrashZone and ICIT2LOL,

Thanks to both of you for your attention and advice, in what should have been a simple matter of changing out a graphics card.

I did get notification from the seller that tomorrow they will be providing me with an RMA. I never had to use the credit card company "dispute charge" routine on them. So in spite of losing the shipping charges back to them, I should be all set to rid myself of this pos card!..
I will happily look at the Optimize Win 7 article you thoughtfully provided me, it will be interesting to see what mods I have already done as opposed to those in the article.

The new card not only works fine, it allows me to use 'SLEEP' when I am away from the machine. The GTS8800 didn't like that mode and I had to shutdown when I was finished. However my Linux install never had that problem, I could put it on standby and come back hours later and it would start back up immediately. So between Win7 and Linux Mint I'm all set and can get back to busiiness.

Best regards from the USA!

Cheers and beers,

J Tinsby

Here we go again, problem is back!

ICIT2LOL, ThrashZone and others,

Wonder of wonders I got a blank screen 2 times in a row yesterday with similar message like before. I didn't get a chance to do a screen shot of the exact message but when it happens again I will be ready. I thought sure I had posted the FIRST error message here but I don't see it, can't imagine where else I'd have done it <sigh>.

THIS message I believe was different in that it said " The Windows Kernel Mode Driver 353.62 has stopped responding but has recovered" (not a direct quote but close) of course that number is for the video driver. I thought sure the other message called the video driver out as being the cause of the error.

This time I Googled that phrase and came up with an alleged fix that included: going to the Nvidia Control Panel and changing the performance settings to maximum & disabling the 3D vertical sync. Supposedly this info came from Nvidia. Too soon to tell if it worked or not. [fix] Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 347.88 stopped responding - YouTube

It puzzles the hell out of me that the new card worked all this time without a hitch and now I am back where I started from. I sure hope this isn't a MOBO failure. This card like the other gets it's power from the PCIe slot. The PS was over spec'd when I built the machine so I doubt that's the issue. I could see it fail entirely, but to be intermittent on one tap doesn't seem reasonable.

Thanks to all, I thought everything was fine until yesterday.

Regards,

J T

Ok JT now I think it is worth looking at the PSU status so use this and post back what you find.

Also can you let us know just what the CPU model is please and have you replaced the thermal compound at all? The HW Info will tell you exactly what the CPU is.
Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton) with VBATT as a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE (sometimes the usual one for Gigabyte boards)
Now the voltage on the different rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machine will not work properly if at all.
Limits +/- (minimum - correct - maximum)
12v1 = 11.4 - 12 - 12.6v
12v2 = 11.4 - 12- 12.6v
5v = 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v
3.3v = 3.135 – 3 – 3.465v
-12v = -10.80 - -12 - -13.20v
+5VSB = 4.75 – 5 - 5.25v
The Power good signal voltage at pin 8 on the 24 pin plug (grey cable) should be the same as the 5v rail reading/s
See this for the rail voltage info
PSUs 101: A Detailed Look Into Power Supplies (Section 2.)
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel
FOR OTHER COMPONENTS
PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. See pic for example.

PS THe board you have should be the same brand as in the pic

ICIT2LOL,

I haven't taken the CPU out and replaced the thermal paste.

I installed the monitoring test program but the version I have looks different than yours. Here are 2 screenshots of the results but there is no VBATT anywhere to be found. I see nothing out of the ordinary as far as voltage fluctuations, if need be I can try to find a different screen but I think I'm on the right one.

The CPU is an Intel Core 2 Quad running at 2.4 Ghz and is not overclocked.

Let me know what you see and think!

Ok JT you have the correct listing there now what is listed below that which is in the pic?? can you scroll down past where the pic says GPU stuff until you get to the bottom and have a look. There must be a voltage readout soemwhere.

If I were at home I could jump on my Asus desktop and guide you but am still away:(

ICIT2LOL,

I have taken screen caps of the entire Right Screen of the HWi Program and zipped all 6 parts up for you to see. I chose this method rather than posting all six in the forum and taking up valuable space. The very first one I sent you prior to this zip file I thought had voltages for the MOBO and CPU which is what I thought you were asking to see, hopefully the zip file clears things up! :D

Thanks and I will wait for your reply as time permits.

This thing just bit me again whilst simply browsing, there's no way to predict what action makes it fail.I will try using Chrome instead of FF and see if that changes things for whatever reason!

Looking at the Nvidia page I see that the driver I have is really out of date. The oldest one they offer is version 375.63 I may try and install that one. Seems like a big jump from 353.16 to that one!

Regards,

J T

Tinsby. I started getting the same problem recently. I've been using the same GPU since I built this machine several years ago and I haven't updated the driver in several years. Since we both started getting the problem roughly at the same time, I'm wondering if the problem may be an update caused issue with either Win 7 or some other program.

May well be Jeanne but the original problem was fixed a while back with a new GTX 750Ti only the problem has come back to haunt.

At the moment there is a hunt on for the cause of this problem and I am sure it is some sort of other hardware issue, unless the card has gone bad:(

All the same I am thinking maybe a system restore might see if it might be an update:huh:

Are you getting the same message as I am?

Hi Lady Fitzgerald,

I've attached a grab of what the error message shows when the monitor comes back on. Are you getting the same message that points to the driver?

ICIT2LOL is working on it with me bit by bit, he's got a lot on his plate at the moment so I really appreciate his or anyone else's help.

Sad thing it with the error and the blank screen it happens so infrequntly it's tough to nail down!

I hope you get yours sorted! There are tons of articles about the same error message, just Google it and see!

Thank you for your interest in my problem! :D

Best thing was whist adding the .jpg attachment to this post,,,,,,,, the monitor went blank and I got the message!!! Weird eh?

PPS: And I was using the Chrome browser not the normal FF!!!

I have the same problem with the error message being too brief and too infrequently to nail down. I'm getting pretty much the same message. My GPU is AMD, though.

Hi,
Seeing that the existing driver is pretty old at 353.62 and the one I'm on is 378.49 I'd say try a driver that was at least offered in late 2016 :)

More to the story!

HI ThrashZone!

Well I have updated the driver and it still acts the same IE: Error message except with the new driver number! <sigh>

But I have found some interesting things in the Event Viewer, I've attached the screen captures below to illustrate. The error is being called by 'nvlddmkm' as you can see there are a lot of them. There's a lot if info around on that error here's one page I found: Fixing the Nvlddmkm Error (Display driver stopped responding and has recovered) (some of these may be outdated due to the age of Win7) The registry hack only shows the 32 bit version of 7.

I have done a lot of them but it makes no sense to do a whole lot at once, that doesn't tell you what hopefully, fixed the issue.

I am soldiering ON, waiting for the next 'crash!'

Hello to ICIT2LOL I know you're out there!

J T

Thrash, Why do you feel that removing the drivers in the linked tutorial is better and more thorough than using the program DDU, Display Driver Uninstaller? Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.6.1 This is specifically designed to remove all vestiges of Nvidia and AMD drivers, including registry entries.

Here's what I have been doing, contrary to the suggestion(s):

I boot to safe mode with no networking, my AV is disabled along with all malware programs
I run the DDU program
Then I install ONLY the graphics driver using Clean Installation
Once done I reboot

Maybe the DDU program wasn't written when the first help tutorial was made. I don't know.

I can do as the article suggests but it's not removing registry entries or the other Nvidia folder that resides in C:\Program Files (x86). But I feel as if I am leaving clutter behind by doing so.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, don't mistake what I am saying as being difficult! :D I want the bleeding thing fixed as much as, or MORE, than you guys!

Regards,

J T
