Display shuts off, computer will not respond

Alright, see how the clean startup goes and whether the problem occurs. Run it with the clean startup for twice as long as it normally takes for the problem to occur (use your best judgment as to the average time it takes since it is random).

Hi sorry for my late reply! I'm going through finals now. I'll try to run those tests this weekend. I actually think part of it is my monitor, and something might be wrong with my card? Earlier today, the screen said "Auto-Adjust", turned off, then turned back on but was still black. The second time I started my computer, the display froze and when it returned back to normal, I got the "AMD display driver has failed and successfully recovered" message or something like that.

darkightz0117, I agree with your theory of the monitor possibly being the issue, or less likely, the cable feeding it. As writhziden said, there are other possibilities, but after reading through the thread I would advise testing with another display, and possibly cable.

so I tried the clean startup, and it still happened. Again, it seems to happen within the first 2-3 minutes of startup, and can occur without me doing anything, but usually it occurs when I open a big window, like Firefox or a big windows explorer window. Sometimes, my display turns back on with the AMD display driver has failed error, or sometimes it doesn't. Should I just buy a new graphics card? Thank you all, for your efforts in helping me!

Have you ran all of the tests writhziden suggested? Have you tried another monitor/hdtv? Cable? If yes and still the same result, go here and make sure your chipset, BIOS, and other drivers are up to date.

Go into the BIOS and set it to load "Fail safe settings".

What kind of PSU do you have?

Please upload screen shots of H.W.Monitor while running Prime95.

I haven't tried another monitor/cable because i do not have access to one. I'm running the video memory test and intelburn test in a little bit. What screenshots of Prime95 should I upload? Are there certain times I should look for?

Also, my drivers and chipset are up to date. I wanted to update the BIOS but it won't work. The setup.exe works and installs, but when I try to update it, I either get "check your internet connection!", even though I am clearly connected to the internet, or it stops responding and has to be closed. Maybe updating the BIOS will work because that version looks new, but I can't seem to do be able to do it.

Edit: scratch that, I tried downloading the utility and that worked. But the BIOS version looks like it's fine, so I guess there's no point in running the utility.

I'm more interested in what h.w.monitor shows. Continue with what you are doing. And keep taking notes, that's good.

Thank you for your help! With h.w. monitor, what screen shots should I have of it? The Video Memory stress Test is taking a while haha. Still a good 2 hours remaining for the first pass, no errors so far.

So when I open it, two windows pop up: one with a lots of option for Central Processor, Motherboard, Memory, Bus, Video Adaptor, Monitor, Drives, Audio, Network, Ports, and one window that's the summary. It sounds like you're looking for the summary window?

Edit: Pass 1 completed, no errors! Oh wait f*** me, are we supposed to do a continuous test? I just started a brand new test haha...

Okay I think these are right. I split it into two parts because my screen doesn't have a high enough resolution. This is what appears right after the stress test.

If I want it to run more than 1 pass, do I just keep starting the stress test after a pass finishes, or do I make it continuous?

Run each test in Prime95 for 10 minutes and take screenshots of the sensors output at that time while the test is still running. I assume the previous screenshots are during idle?

10 minutes should be enough to reach the peak temperatures. Make sure to stop the tests if the temperatures get too high, though. Anything over 57 C for a processor core should warrant a stop and an immediate post to us that it reached that high a temperature.

Oh no, the previous screen shots were for testing the graphics card memory. I thought that was the problem since it was the driver that kept crashing?

James was responding to the above, and specifically to the question that I put in bold. The screenshots you gave are actually a good baseline, though, so they are helpful. The system is essentially in idle during a video memory test, or at least, it is under very little stress. :)

You may still want to give some idle screenshots. Let your system do nothing for 15 minutes (do not run any applications, basically). Then take a screenshot of the temperatures and voltages as before.
