Do Memory Cleaners improve the memory usage and performance?

I am currently using MemClean and it not only decreases my memory use but it also seems to improve the general performance of Windows and apps.

Is this really the case or is it just my impression?

It is just your impression.

Windows 7 has very good memory management on it's own and has no need for and will not benefit from any third party memory "cleaners", "optimizers", "boosters", etc. The only very questionable benefit is to make the numbers in Task Manager more attractive to those who do not understand them.

David Solomon and Mark Russinovich, both well recognized Windows experts, mentioned these programs in the Microsoft publication "Windows Internals", sixth edition. They were very critical and did not recommend these programs.

Memory cleaners are a complete sham. They only clean your wallet. Nothing more.

I get great results when using an old version 6.0 of WinUtilities Memory Optimizer.

I find that when I use Nero WaveEditor to record .wav files from the line outputs of my stereo amplifier to the line input on my soundcard, I need to run Memory Optimizer after each track. Shutting down and restarting WaveEditor does not help. If I don't run the Memory Optimizer, the next track I record will have pops, clicks, dropouts, or missing segments of music. I've done this with Windows 95, XP, and 7 with excellent results.

Memory cleaners may be of some use in unusual and short lived situations. I don't know of any but I wouldn't rule it out entirely. But in the large majority of cases they will be a net loss to performance, a matter of one 1 forward, 2 steps back.

In recent years It could be said that Microsoft has been obsessed with performance. Those are not my words. They have introduced some quite complex features that provide relatively little gain. I am not saying that is wrong. Memory cleaners (or whatever you call them) are really quite simple and unsophisticated, in spite of what they might claim. They are well known to Microsoft designers. If they really were beneficial Windows would have one built in. But wait, it does. The functionality is built right into Windows where it works silently and efficiently. It is highly sophisticated but follows principles that are a complete mystery to most computer users, most of whom have ideas of memory management that have been obsolete for decades.

Also keep in mind that rebooting the computer cleans the RAM quite effectively. The only use I've seen work [quites some time ago] was when having more than one program open and one freezes due to memory issues but the other program/s aren't ready to be closed yet, may result in data loss but then their data may also be lost at the same time.
