Do people actually like to double click?

Like I said I use double click, but what I didn't mention is that I use key commands extensively.
More than 50%.

I forced myself to learn all the commands after I had RSI in 2001.
Worked with AutoCad 12 hrs a day in those days.

PS: A tip: anyone aware of win key + number launches the apps on the taskbar in the order you have pinned them?
When already open, it maximizes, minimizes the app.
(only works for the first 9 pinned apps.)

We (115 users I suppport) use a combination of XP (Home and PRO) and Vista Ult 64bit and Vista 32bit Prem, all of which have the option to revert to the Classsic interface which all users prefer.
I have 2 systems (2 months moving around) with Win7 and Office 7 for clients to use to get some feedback.
All have responded to NO to WIN7 and as for the Ribbon in Office 2007 the have also stated NO WAY.
These have NOT been 5 minute trails but have been in place for 1 week, with 2 different operaters, some professional secereties and just users.
If MS dont want to "listen" and im not alone read the forums and bloggs around 60% I would estimate.
Also how many VISTA seats were reverted to XP, this is another subject MS will NOT give out the numbers.
If I was an MS CEO I would start listening or WIN7 could end up like VISTA, and Microsoft?????......

I don't think it's accurate to state "all users" prefer the classic interface. Perhaps all your users do, although I frankly find that a bit odd and unlikely, but in any case, if I was an administrator or whatever, I wouldn't be basing my OS choices on what secretaries are telling me.

The Office 2007 ribbon is a different topic and beyond the scope of this thread, imo.

On my machines, I always set my folder options to single click for opening items and whenever I encounter a computer that is not set up this way, I find it quite annoying. Do many people actually use and like the double click option? If so, why?

Single click here also.
That's first thing I set up after I install Windows.
I hate using other computers and have to double click to open folders.

Forgive me if I generalize this a bit to much, but..

I believe in corporate situations you have to tube feed new technology to the users, because corporate users are the last to except even the simplest of changes.

Also seems a bit useless to poll users about an OS that they haven't seen yet.
You can just guess what the outcome will be.

It's interesting to see people use Microsoft's Web Office. In usability testing, the majority of people double clicked when only on click was necessary. This was b/c they were in a browser. When the browser becomes more integral with the OS, I can see greater confusion. Maybe then there will be agreement and consensus on one/two clicks.

I have just spend 5 days (Mon to Fri 4 hours daily using) on a WIN7 system And Im about to the following.... (this wont fix the WIN interface or layout (Librarys) who ever though that up wants shooting)to find a Classsic UI plugin.
If that dont work I will be moving 115 users to another O/S and Office Suite.
Multiplty me around the world and MS stand to loose alot of Money.

As for the XP compatiability sorry you still need to learn Win7 NOT good.

This I'm afraid is a sad indictment on the state of mind of a lot of so called sysadmins these days. A major role of the sysadmin is to evaluate the options available to their employer and work to integrate advances in technology to the benefit of their users and the business, no matter what their personal preferences are.

There is no way I would class the evaluation as adequate "two users for a whole week", this is not evaluation it is merely paying lip service to the idea of system evaluation.

It would appear that the "trial" was set up to use new software (word 2007), on a New OS, (Win7), which invalidates any results for either item.

My many years experience in the IT business has shown me that although human nature is such that when offered the option to change the likely response is "no thank you" the actual change is taken in their stride by the the vast majority of users .

If you are going to evaluate a new system let's do it by use of results not pre-conceived FUD due to a personal unwillingness or ability to encompass change

I read this whole thread and I'm still not convinced by you 'single clickers' out there. What is the real advantage to single click setups? Someone please enlighten me.

For me the double click is the way to go hands down. I dont have to worry about mis-clicks and I like having complete control over what I want the computer to do, rather than have the computer guess what I want to do.

What if you want to just select the file to control + c? you have to "hover" the file and wait for the computer to select it? That seems like a waste of time, a bigger waste of time than double click over single click is... Plus i use the single-click-lag feature to rename files a LOT.

A double click takes literally a millisecond longer than a single click and offers more control over the system interface.

Also to the person that was implying that single-click is default? on what system? because my 7 came with double defaulted.

Idk, I guess if you want to have the computer decide what you wanted to do for you (ie single click) maybe you should be using a mac

The point of this thread was not to convince anyone of anything, it was too see who single/ double clicked.

And he was talking about Dell or Sony that had theirs default to that.

Well I single click and much prefer the action set that way, I've never had any problems either and the reason I set my husbands computer the same was because he's not able to double click, his fingers aren't capable of the movement.

I wouldn't associate the type of clicks we perform based on our knowledge of computers.

We choose what 'feels' best to us, not what is the fastest or easiest. We are comfortable with what is good for US.

You could well be close with your guesstimate but I believe for different reasons from the level of expertise .

The very fact that many System administrators have been in the field for many years and will likely be double clickers because they only had this option when they started.

The word experience is probably better than expertise in this context the two are not always interchangeable
