I downloaded seven on the same hdd that my xp was loaded onto and it created the 'windows.old' folder. i wanted to delete this folder because it had nothing i wanted to keep, however, when i tried to do so, the 'documents and settings' folder would not delete.

when i try to delete it, i get this message: 'this is no longer located in C:\Users\kyle\Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again.'

any ideas on what to do so that i can delete this folder would be greatly appreciated.

Try and log off then log on again to see if it's still there.

I reset my computer and it's still there. And I dragged it onto the desktop if that makes any difference.

It sounds like a mismatch of data between the shortcut on your desktop & the actual file location. I've seen this only once or twice before (long ago), it may be that Windows is trying to delete & refresh at the same time which would cause this error. The best thing I can suggest is that if there is nothing you need to keep then a clean install (format the partition) may be the best option.

You may also want to check the 'Security' settings for the folder just to allow yourself full access to the Windows.old directory & all files & folders within. Check here - Context Menu - Take Ownership - Vista Forums - to see about taking ownership of the entire folder & all files.

Hope this helps :)
