The OP is referring to the navigation panel. That is, the panel on the left with the tree of folders and whatnot. Not the preview panel (Alt + P)

Ways to do Toggle the Navigation Panel in Win7 (and winXP)
Typically in Win7 it's toggled through Organize > Layout > Navigation Panel. According to your link to the knowledge base, there's no hotkey/shortcut to toggle the Navigation Panel.

In WinXP could toggle it by way of Alt + V (View) > E (Explorer Bar) > O (Folders).


The Problem
In Win7, there's no Alt + to get to "Organize", in order to toggle the Navigation Panel... leaving it to be almost a mouse-only option. 'Keyboard-preferred' users may find this mouse-only option a lil frustrating. I know I do (I am a 'keyboard-preferred' user - would rather use keyboard to do most things over the mouse/touchpad/clicking on buttons). In particular, for setups where I can use the Win+Left/Right key to dock two windows side by side, the arrow keys and alt+up/backspace, it's all keyboard driven except for when turning off the nav panel. When the explorer windows are docked as such, I usually find myself not needing the nav panel and would much rather more screen space for the files panel. A Solution (Of many? Not that I know of atm) There may be other options out there, but googling and whatnot has left me without luck. Microsoft's List of Shortcuts Mike provided is useful, but if we take that the list as the complete list of hotkeys in Explorer, then there -isnt- a simple hotkey to toggle the nav panel. The only way I have found to get to that option via the keyboard only is through the use of Tab keystrokes. Info: Assuming you have a fresh Explorer open (Win+E), tabbing will cycle through: 1) Files (Right Panel) 2) Address Bar [Note: F4 or Alt+D will also let you jump here] 3) Search Bar [Note: F3 or Ctrl + E or Ctrl + F will let you jump here] 4) "Organize" and all those other buttons. (The action panel? or whatever it's called) 5) Navigation Panel 6) Back to 1), the Files Panel. With Organize hilighted, you can then press Space/Enter, L (Layout), N (Navigation). Hit tab once more and you'll jump focus back to the file window. Keystroke: The main keystroke I use the most is F3/Ctrl+E > Tab > Space > L > N > Tab to toggle the Nav Panel. (The final tab is to focus back on files rather than remain on the organize button) [Tip: Use a macro keyboard/autohotkey app, etc...] The way this works is F3 will make your focus jump to the search bar, regardless of where your focus is currently at. It then only requires 1 tab to get to the organize button, and then the rest is the same. You can use F4 to jump to the address bar, but it'll require 2 tab presses, etc... It's a kind of long winded way around, but it's the only way I've found to do it with the keyboard. And provided I sometime get sweaty hands when working on my workstations, my touchpad becomes less responsive/wont respond. So I prefer using just the keyboard and not have to see my chances of the touchpad working in that instant. I came across this page through Google, and hope this post helps other people too. If anyone has any other ways around this I'd be interested in knowing.

Yes, sorry, you are quite right!

Was programming a script to manipulate the preview pane and was obviously too fixated on it!

I toggle a registry key with an Autohotkey script to open and close the navigation pane, although I very rarely use it.

I don't have it on this machine right now.

@Mike Conner: scripting seems a little too advanced for me. But perhaps you could tell us what you changed in the registry using your script. So if I should ever get hip to scripting I'd know exaclty where to look for the keys in the registry

Remember that you have to enable Classic Shell in INTERNET Explorer because you an enable it in WINDOWS Explorer.
