drive encryption

Long story short lm looking into usb drive encryption (specifically for a usb thumb drive, l cant use bitlocker as lm in Win7 Pro 64bit), something that will either encrypt the whole drive or part of it as l dont know how much space l will need. basically l dont want to accidentally loose it and it end up being picked up by someone with sticky fingers.

lm hoping the softeware doesnt slow the drive down like the lexar jump drives lve had in the past which have long since failed.

Yea the constant encryption and decrypting can wear out gear
Kind of the price you pay for security,

The other toll is loosing the software on the original windows install or it becomes corrupt thus loosing data
I wouldn't encrypt a drive where an os exists anyway but the same as above plus loosing the drive as well
Which I would ask would it also encrypt the mobo bios thus trashing it as well :shock:

I'd just find it most simplistic to buying a safe and bolting it down somewhere put everything in it

Here's what I use for USB encryption. Can plug encrypted USB into any machine and still use it.

I would still look at TrueCrypt (or at the very least one of its recent forks). It's very capable of either full-disk encryption or partial encryption though containers and those can be put on the USB disk. Being not tied with one specific Windows install is a big advantage too.

About the speed, encryption is mostly tied to the CPU speed, by itself it doesn't adds up significantly more IO than with a plain disk. It will always be slower as there is an additional process required, but that's almost all CPU cycles, so typically it's not very noticeable.

wheres the best place to get the recent versions of truecrypt? as l plan to look into a few different softwares to see which is best for what l plan to use it for.
