How to Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu​

This tutorial is a simple guide that will explain the two easiest ways to setup and install Ubuntu to dual-boot with your current installation of Windows. One option describes how to do this via WUBI. Another describes how to do this as a native dual-boot.

   Warning

Neither Designer Media Ltd (Sevenforums) nor myself are responsible for any problems that occur from the following tutorial.

   Note

Please bear in mind that the WUBI installation method installs Ubuntu as if it is an application on Windows. It does NOT use its own partitions.

OPTION ONE

Using Wubi Installer

Step 1: Go to this website, download and run the Wubi installer.


Step 2: Select the hard drive you wish to install it on. Keep in mind it will NOT erase Windows.

Step 3: Select the amount of space you want to give tos Ubuntu to use. I recommend 3GB.


Step 4: Select your desktop enviornment. This is personal prefernce, if you are new to Linux I suggest sticking with Ubuntu.


Step 5: Select your language.


Step 6: Set your screenname. Note that this cannot contain capitalized letters of any kind.


Step 7: Set your password. When you have completed that hit the install button and wait!


Step 8: When it finishes downloading and installing Ubuntu, just restart to boot into Ubuntu!

OPTION TWO

Native Install

Step 1: Burn a CD/DVD with the Ubuntu ISO through Windows.


Step 2: Boot from the CD/DVD when you start up your computer.


Step 3:
Press the up button the moment something appears on that screen and select a language.

Step 4: Select the option 'Try ubuntu without installing'.

Step 5: When the desktop appears double click the icon on the desktop called 'Install Ubuntu'.

Step 6: When the installer launches fully, select your language and hit the foward button.

Step 7: On this screen you'll want to choose that options you want. I suggest selecting them both. Hit the foward button again after you select what you want.

Step 8: On this screen you'll want to select the 'specify partitions' option and click foward.

Step 9: Here as you can see we already have some unallocated space, click it and select the 'Add' button. (Note: You can select an already created partition, make sure not to overwrite your Windows partition!)

Step 10: A window should pop up, you should make the mount point '/' and the 'Use as' EXT4 filesystem. Click Ok when done.

Step 11: After that click the 'Install Now' button and follow the onscreen instructions.


Step 12: You'll be prompted to reboot after its finished, reboot and select the top option in the Grub 2 Boot Loader and you're now in Ubuntu!

LM13 was interesting! That wouldn't install to the second drive here when tried however or even to a flash drive. The LM Debian release however goes right through a normal Linux install. Why the LM 13 Cinnamon wouldn't install remains a mystery.

Ubuntu however is a fast install being a live cd over a live dvd distro there. You can work with ubuntu when going to do things in the EasyBCD program while LM and LM Debian seem to be incompatible with NeoGrub.

Just out of interest I see Comodo make a free anti virus software for Linux and if I dual boot the machine I intend having it on I am now thinking - a) does the Ubuntu need this anti virus software b) is it worth as it says it requires 40GB disk space (which I think might be a misprint / typo) and c) more importantly is it going to clash with the Kaspersky I have set for the machine if Windows?

I have seen quite a bit about Linux based systems not needing security but I cannot imagine that there are some that see what appears to be a rise in the use of the alternative OS's to attack them.

40GB does seem excessive. I would install it, and it wont clash with Kaspersky installed under Windows because you are booting Ubuntu (windows is not started).

Here I run most distros on a VM to start with before ever planning a regular install to the second drive where Linux Mint Debian was until just lately pending on whether or not to slap the 90day trial for Win 8 Enterprise there. The rest of the drive holds a system image or two to backup the main here.

When running a VM the same web filters the av program's firewall offers here or 7 is extended onto the VM as well. I seem to get full coverage simply by still being booted in Windows while able to run another OS at the same time. The LMDebian install on the second drive there wouldn't have had any worries about bugs but more or less active x controls and a few other things due to the default install's own default security settings sometime getting in the way.

While bugs are actually far less commonly for Linux don't think for a minute you are foolproof! Surprise! There's bugs out there for all OSs! They simply tend to spread much faster with Windows due to more email and other activities including social networks when people share files at times. Other pitfalls like bogus sites and scamwares can catch you offguard as well when not having any layer of protection inplace.

Ok mate personally I think the quoted disk space must be out of whack cos my KIS is measured in MB's. I might just contact Comodo to verify what has been stated.

VIPRE Internet Security 2013 only takes 269mb when right clicking on the main folder for the av program here. 40gb is what you would expect to be the size of a Linux OS root partition not the software on it as far as the Linux version especially when Comodo is usually on the smaller side as far as softwares go.

How about dual booting with a different Linux say PClinuxOS 64 bit? Or Suse?

You may find out fast that you wouldn't be able to use the EasyBCD program if you are planning to add a boot entry into the 7 BCD store using the NeoGrub option. I've run into a few times on non ubuntu based distros like Linux Mint Debian. Haven't tried Zorin on a physical drive quite yet to see how the ubuntu LTS type release would work.

Open Suse and others would likely need the Wubi or Grub bootloader unless set up as a stand alone install to a second drive without any Windows involvement. You would simply choose the second drive at post time using the boot device menu to see the Linux side start up rather then making any changes to the 7 host. And then of course there is always the VM option for simply looking any Linux flavor over without any worry about the 7 mbr and boot sector.
