DVD/CD drive keeps grunting

Hi, this is on a Sony Vaio notebook. Model number PCG-61112L

The DVD/CD drive keeps making a continual "grunting" sound. I can't think of a better way to describe the sound. The only way to make it quit is to eject the drive.

Does anyone know of a way to help me?

Try turning of virus protection to see if it stops. Perhaps your virus software is trying to scan the drive. Is the drive empty when the grunting noise happens? If so, what happens if you put a disc in it - or vise versa?

If its grunting or grinding during read/write OPs, it might be necessary to via Device Manager Devices remove said reader/writer; reboot, let Windows rediscover and resupply the drivers for it. If that doesn't change the noise, if the previous poster's idea doesn't change the noise -- it could be a hardware problem, the CD-DVD device itself.

The optical drive might need some cleaning if it's dirty or dusty inside the compartment. The grunt sounds might be the gears that move the optical lens armature back and forth over a disk when reading data or playing media.

When you insert a disk and allow it to sit static (i.e. not reading the disk) does it still make those 'grunt' sounds?

It could also mean that the drive is simply getting old (normal wear and tear) and reaching its end-of-life.

Hi CountryBumpkin, thanks for that idea but it made no difference with the virus software disabled. It was empty so I put a disk into it and it kept grunting and after a while it ejected and said it could not find a disk in it. I tried another disk but it could no recognise the disk. I noticed that after about 5 minutes of grunting it quieted down.

Thanks RolandJS, I did reinstall the driver and it didn't make any difference.

Thanks HelloItsMeAgain, I cleaned the drive and it made no difference. When I insert a disk it keeps grunting but eventualy goes quiet and then ejects the disk and tells me to insert a disk like it never saw the one that was in there.

Maybe it is a hardware problem. Thanks everybody, Jim
