DVD Digital Copies

I don't want to have to use the Digital Copy of my DVD's because of the whole stinking DRM crap, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I go about digitizing a few of my movies so that we can watch them on ANY computer?

These are the movies for which I have the Digital Copy DVD of:
I Am Legend
Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas Special
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
The Avengers
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises
The Incredible Hulk
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Handbrake, MeGUI are 2 of the best encoders to make digital copies. My personal favorite is MeGUI but it does have a steeper learning curve if unfamiliar.
Either should provide superior quality to the Digital copies, but it all depends on setting and files sizes you aim for.

But you'll also need something like AnyDVD. Its best to rip the entire disc to your HD, then work with it for converting to files.

Will any of these do in place of AnyDVD?

AnyDVD is required to remove copyright protection (DRM), which is what normally keeps you from ripping the DVD to HDD .

If you're just making a copy for yourself and no one else the harm is minimal (legal wise) although the Movie and Music industry would disagree.

Once you have a copy on the HDD, you can start moving it around your devices and/or altering the format to suit your needs (IE: reduced MB or viewing size to fit on iPhone, iPad, laptop, etc).

If the programs you have listed above can copy the copyright protected DVD, they should work for your purposes.

(I'm going to start sounding like the copyright police now, no other way to say what comes next)

But, ripping usually requires DRM removal. Unless things have changed, AnyDVD is the only one I know of that can reliably do that. Of course, you've violated DRM with that and technically are doing something illegal (copyright wise that is). That's why the industry started giving DRM protected "copies"; it's an attempt to let consumers have more flexibility with the media they purchase without resorting to ripping which can lead to "pirated" copies floating around. It isn't working out quite as well as they had hoped....

But if you're only ripping it for yourself, the likelihood of getting "caught" is pretty much nil.

Another endorsement for AnyDVD as posted by the previous poster.

If you don't mind paying a SMALL amount try AnyDVD -- it can also remove region encoding.
Who needs this B/s any more --I travel a lot and if I buy a DVD in the USA why shouldn't I be able to play it when I get home --same the other way around - for you people from the USA visiting Europe.

AnyDVD will make an IDENTICAL iso -- menus, subtitles, audio tracks, extras and all - with CSS and region encoding removed. Windows 8 allows "Virtual ISO" mounting so you don't even need to burn the DVD to a physical disk. To play on your TV just use the computer / laptops HDMI out or stream it.

(One of the few reasons I have a Windows 8 laptop Windows 8 mounts ISO images without the need for 3rd part software --then you just play with VLC or your DVD player of choice). --On W7 you can burn a physical DVD / install free Virtual ISO mounting software or rip directly to HDD if you don't want the iso image).


Note using anyDVD to remove CSS encryption or regional encoding might be illegal in the USA --it's fine where I am so long as the DVD is for MY OWN USE. However I don't expect any visit from Hollywood Lawyers to central Reykjavik in Mid January even if the temperature is currently 6 deg C --warmer than parts of Scotland !!

I have a load of ISOS stored on a small WD passport self powered 2 TB USB3 ext drive --which I use for playing movies when I'm travelling / in hotels etc.

Technically this might be going "Near" Forum breaking rules --but my take on copy protection is that if I've LEGALLY purchased a DVD (or other digital media) I should be able to play it WHERE and WHEN I want to without it being "Regionalized" or restricted to certain devices.

Would you buy a Car if it said --You can only use these 3 Gas stations to fill up. --I think not somehow - but that's what some of this DRM is akin to.

That's pretty much what I want to do. I want to turn my DVD's into digital copies/iso files, put them on my WD Passport & be able to play them through VLC directly/mount them & then use VLC.

So, is AnyDVD all I need? Never tried this before.
