DVD read problem

I have a very unusual problem, one I have never seen in all the years of building my own computers. In have done a clean install of Windows 7. I installed Office 2007 and Adobe Photoshop without a problem on my custom built desktop.

But when I attempt to install any game, the DVD fails to read it. In most cases, it ejects the game DVD with the message that I need to put a disc in the drive. Of note: all of these games install and run fine on my Vista laptop. The games are Obllivion, Witcher and Dungeon Siege. And yes my laptop has the video card to run them.

Specs:

Desktop:
CPU: Intel duo core, E7400 @ 2.80GHz
3 gigs of ram, 160gig hard drive, yes I know it is small.
Nvidia 7900 GS video card, Samsung 23" LCD monitor and a Audgy 2 ZS

The laptop is the same except it has a 8600GS video card and on board sound.

Eh, could be that the laser needs to be cleaned on the DVD drive. Do DVD movies play alright? Or do other software DVDs install correctly? (You didn't say if you installed PS and Office from an image on the HDD or a physical DVD...)

sorry I wasn't clear. It plays movies, and the software installed from the DVD. Only games wouldn't install. I installed another DVD(not RW) and it worked just fine. I'll try to clean it this weekend, but I suspect that my 3+ year old drive is going bad. I've got what appear to be issues with my 7900tg video card.

My bad sorry:D

I had a thought (something strange for me) could it be the copy protections the game dvd's have? Maybe the apps dont have copy protection but the games do. I had the same problem on a 5 year old dvd player (sony) any the only way I could get around it without replacing the drive was to share another working dvd player on the network and do a net install.

Hope this helps

Ken

i am new beginner of windows 7 and also new for this forum. I don't how to publish my problem so that everybody can see and help. I have a problem that is so complicated for me. I really really hope and I am begging that someone can solve it. I just formatted my netbook compact Presario CQ40 from Windows Vista to Windows 7. There is so many problem occurs. But the biggest problem is my netbook is unable to read certain DVD copies for example the burned DVD. The situation might be a little bit confusing but I'll try to explain more detail. My netbook can't read the cheap DVD that are used to burn something. But if DVD's like Windows 7, Games DVD, Movie DVD, no problem! But if the burned DVD for example, my netbook can't read it. It is just like doing nothing when I insert the cheap DVD. Nothing happens.I hope readers will understand my English and also my problem. I don't know how to explain but I think it is something more like it. I really hope that someone will read this and help me pleaseee....I really don't know what to do.:(
