DVR Burnt DVD Won't play!

Hello I am new Anyways.... I have a DVD I borrowed from a friend for a few days... The DVD has a few TV Shows on it that I'd like to rip on my computer so I can keep it for a reference, It's a training video. When I insert the DVD into my computer it doesn't read the disc and when I click on my D Drive it just says to insert a disc. I am running Microsoft 7 if that makes a difference and her TV shows were put on the DVD via her DVR. I am very frustrated and really need these DVDs. I tried to play the DVD in a DVD Player and it won't read the DVD. When I put it in the computer it says Windows doesn't read this format. It's a DVD-R and I have a brand new laptop that plays, rips, burns all types of Discs and I have never had an issue until now. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem or knows how I can get the disc to play.

If it won't play in a DVD player or on your PC its probably a bad disc.
Does your PC play other DVD's OK? If so you can eliminate a problem with your PC

when someone burns a DVD usually it needs to be burned in a format that is readable on both the computer, and stand alone DVD players....it seems either this DVD was not burned properly, and/or it wasn't finalized properly.
Also, if the disc has many scratches on it, it makes it very difficult to play for some players, while others no problem.

I'd say there is a very good chance that grimreaper nailed it with the second part. The fact that you mentioned it "has a few TV Shows on it" tells me that your friend was adding episodes as they came out and probably hasn't filled up the disc yet. They'll probably need to finalize it in their machine.

If your drive is a burner, open your DVD burning software and see what it tells you about the disc.

Windows 7 won't play dvd-r recordings

So I just bought a JVC DR-MV5. It has the great ability to make DVDs from VHS tapes. Pretty cool, yes? And it works.
It makes great recordings that play on my Marantz DVD player.
But it won't play on my Dell XPS M1530 running Windows 7 Ultimate 32. The JVC does require a DVD-R.
Does anybody know what might cause this problem, and if there is a solution?

Some drives just don't get along with homemade discs. I've read that that is often caused by the laser in the drive being not quite strong enough. I don't know if that's true, but if there is any truth to it I could see it being more of a problem in a laptop.

Have you tried a different brand of blank DVD? Incompatibility between drives and media is another chief source of problems like that.

Finally, what shows up in Windows Explorer when the disc is in the drive? Does it detect the disc at all? If it does, try a different DVD playback program. VideoLAN - VLC is one which often succeeds where others don't.
