I just installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, and when it tries to connect to my wifi, the computer freezes and requires me to do a hard reset of the system.

I have a D-Link DWA-547 PCI card, and this seems to be the culprit. If I am quick I can disable the card before it starts to connect to the internet. Once it connects, the computer freezes.

I have tried several drivers for the card without luck including:

1.40b06
1.60(E)b12
The default drivers that Windows 7 installed (7.0.0.84 I think...)

They all freeze the computer.

Has anyone run into this before, and found a solution?

Try installing the driver using the device manager.

Right click on it. Update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Double click the .inf. Hit ok. Hit next.

Thanks for the reply.

I will try that. The other drivers did not work, even with the same method as you described.

Hi there,

I see I'm not the only one to have problem with this card.

It was installed automatically by windows 7 which then did some windows update for the drivers. (I'm sorry I don't have the references of these at the moment cause I'm at work but I guess same as mentionned in the first post).
At the beginning it was working even if the signal was really weak and that I sometimes loose the connexion without being able to reconnect without disabling the card and reenabling it a few seconds later.
But now, connexion is still very unstable and the computer really often freeze. No other way than hard reboot ...

Do the last drivers works for you ?

Unfortunately I was unable to make the drivers work. I got a Code 10 on the device after installing the driver, which is better than freezing, but worse than working :)

I will try a bunch of other drivers I foudn and see what I come up with...

So far, D-Link hasn't supplied any Windows 7 drivers, and it doesn't show up on the Windows 7 compatibility list either. That card uses an Atheros chipset, so if you check the Atheros website you might find a Windows 7 driver that works, or an older Vista driver that works.

Is there a way to find what chipset is in use in the card?

Pull the card out and it should be written on the chip.

This is what you can do.

Rar or zip the inf you tried to install from, from my previous post. Attach to a post using the paperclip.

Along with that, right click the card in device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste the results in a new post as well, with the above attachment.

I can attempt to see if I can get it to install for you.

The driver would be unsigned though so you will have to permanently disable driver enforcement, so that's a decision to weight and you might not want to do this.

That sounds tempting. However, after going through close to 12 drivers, both Atheros and Dlink ones, I decided to cut my losses and move my wifi router closer to the desktop and just cable it.

Got a little impatient maybe, but a brand new computer is going to waste :)

Thanks for all suggestions. Maybe I can PM you later if I decide to give it a shot torrentg?

Sure, either that or posting here will be fine.

Even though I've studied wireless very thoroughly - hacking methods and schemes, encryptions, authentication methods etc - and find it to be completely safe with WPA2 and especially with a RADIUS server - I still like wired better. So good move with the wired.

If you're curious at all, Google "Monkey in the middle wireless" or "Man in the middle wireless" to learn some interesting things.
