Aaaargh! I successfully installed the 32-bit windows 7 on my computer, upgrading it from windows XP. I spent an hour realizing how awesome the new OS is before deciding i needed to reformat to be sure i was rid of all spyware/malware. After trying to do the clean install, I keep getting the "Windows cannot install required files" error right when the install starts "expanding". It goes to 1% and then stops. I am installing this from an ISO off of a 4GB flash drive.
Here's what I have tried so far:
Redownloading and rewritting the flash drive (several times)
Updating the BIOS drivers
Restarting the installation without a reboot
Running chkdsk on the flash drive

None of these things have worked for me. I know that it has been suggested to set the hard drive (i think..) to SATA or AHCI, but this goes right over my head. Any help would be great

Is there anything else to try?

I had a problem like yours on a Dell. I had to flash the BIOS to get it to load Windows 7. I don't know if that applies to your problem but it is worth a shot.

Try this:

Hi,

1. Boot into the BIOS
2. Change from "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" to "RAID Autodetect / ATA" or similar for your BIOS.
3. Press escape, choose Save / Exit.

The only option I can find under the BIOS utility is editing the SATA to either ACHI mode or compatability mode.

Try ACHI, then SATA, then Compatibility mode.

How old is your machine? Does it meet the Windows 7 Compatibility requirements?

I installed, from a USB stick on to an ASUS netbook.

All settings were at their defaults, except for setting the thing to boot from USB which can be tricky on the ASUS.

I strongly suggest going to the manufacturer's website and checking for their advice on installing Win 7 and especially using a USB stick.

Every mfg has its own little quirks.

Of great importance is to make sure that the bios is up-to-date.

Updating a bios ("flashing" the bios) is a procedure which must be followed letter-perfect as described by the mfg for a particular model.

A bad bios update ofter renders your computer completely useless.

Some computers require the bios to be updated to function correctly under Win 7.

Read, Read, and ReRead the flash instructions before updating the bios.

I've done it numerous times on many computers over the years and never had any problems. I simply follow the mfgs procedure precisely with zero deviations.

After consulting the manufacturers recommendations re Win 7 and re updating the bios, and after following the instructions. Let us know if there are still problems.

If you have nothing on the computer to save boot with the thumb, but move it back to it's original space in the bios 1st. Having the thumb boot automatically is not a good idea in that W7 will do 3 restart and you have to remove that thumb on the 1st restart and doing this while it is set as the boot in bios could be tricky and could be causing problems. W7 will install in sata or ahci setups sata is supposedly faster I have used both with no difference on one computer but this is my experience. So boot with the thumb if you have the ISO version loaded with the W7 usb loader and use the key prompt to choose the booting device.

This install method may mean having to call MS to get the key set through the phone option if you don't get that option when you attempt to verify.

I have had no problems with MS in doing the key verification when needed. They want everybody to use MS so they will help you.

If I understood your post, I have been doing this. I haven't edited the BIOS order, I just select the flash drive from the list. I have been getting an error the first time i go through the installer, It tells me that No drivers are found, but if I run setup through command prompt it will find the files. I flashed the BIOS according the the Lenovo websites instructions, and looked at their advice for installing Windows 7, which is actually just a word for word copy of microsoft's own instructions. I'm still getting the error right away.

fing,

How are you getting to a command prompt?

That may sound like a strange question, but the answer is very important to understanding your problem.

fing,

Just noticed something else you said.

CHANGE THE BOOT ORDER!

You want to boot from the USB.

This may sound trivial but believe me, you want to boot from the USB.

My advice is not theory. I've installed from a USB stick.

fing,
Do you not have a Win 7 DVD?

The Win 7 on the USB stick-- how did it get there?

Will you be making a completely clean install (which for reasons beyond me, Microsoft calls a Custom install)?

I've taken a gander at some of Lenova's advice, etc re your notebook.

If at boot time, you press the F12 key, then:
is one of the options to boot from USB?

I downloaded the software from microsoft, the cds are in the mail. I am making a clean install, and the f12 key pulls up the boot menu, but I edited the boot order, so I don't have to hit anything it automatically boots from the flash disc. I'm transferring a fresh ISO onto my flash drive right now.

fing,

If you want to put that ISO file on to a DVD (CD is not big enough), then an excellent, free, extremely easy to use program is :

CD/DVD
ImgBurn - the ultimate image burner
CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application, free

What software are you using to put the ISO onto a USB stick?
