IT WORKED!

I went back one day, nope, still had the problem with installing any executables. So I went back three days, before the last MS Critical Update and before installing a beta version of my AV. All is well now. I re-installed the non-beta version of my AV, re-installed Open Office, and all is well. The only thing that could mess up now is when MS goes to install the critical update again. Hoping that will go smoothly.

I must say, System Restore -- and you -- really rock!

Problems like this happen all the time. To avoid the panic that you just experienced take these simple steps.

Once a week or more if you prefer.

Make a back up and restore (your personal mail, doucments, pictures etc)

Make a system resore point. The you always know that you have a current one to fall back on in case of problems.

Once a week or so make a system image. This is a copy of your entire hard drive. No matter what happens we can fix it with the system image. That was going to be my next step. It is a big gun, though. It is not like system restore; everything changes, mail, doucments and pictures.

But if you did step one and two above, you can use the big System Image and replace everything that was changed with your back ups that you made in step one and two.

Thank you, Rich. I do create backups and system restore points fairly frequently (probably not frequently enough - maybe every two weeks), so I did know that I could probably recover from this, but I wasn't sure how, since I hadn't ever had the need to use System Restore. I was very relieved to know that I wouldn't lose my personal files...I wasn't 100% sure how it worked.

This has definitely been a valuable learning experience, and I thank you again for all the help. This forum has been invaluable for this and a couple of other previous questions I've had.

Error 5 is referring to permission which Windows 7 and Windows Vista is known for. First thing which you could try would be to Right Click on Setup and Run as administrator. If that fails then try install the application in Build-in Administrator account (Method 2 is more easy)

Unfortunately, neither of these suggestions worked for me. It also was not a virus or other malware, and system file check revealed no issues. I rolled back to a point three days ago, and all was well again. Between that time and when I noticed the issue yesterday, two major things had happened on my system: a Windows critical update had been installed, and I'd downloaded and installed a beta version of my Anti-virus (Vipre) with Firewall.

After performing System Restore, seeing that I could now install programs again, and shutting down last night, the Windows updates were once again automatically installed. With fear and trepidation, I booted up this morning, and all was still well. So, in my case, it appears that the Vipre Beta may have caused the problem. It could have been something else, but that seems the most likely cause. I reinstalled the non-beta version (without firewall), and all is well now.

You aren't by any chance a Vipre user, are you?

try it already... same error... my acount has all the privileges like an administrator. however, i'd try as an adminastartor, from right click menu, and in the administtartor acount.. same error all over again.

Vipre? antivirus, right?¿ i have the nod32... i just run it... nothing found.

same problem appear a while ago... i formated the computer and start all over again from scrath... computer worked just fine, no problem... til last week, when this problem happened.

Ah, Jacee...this link helped. I suspect in my case the error occurred because the beta Vipre version I installed had a firewall (the normal version I use does not). I probably just didn't have it configured correctly. D'oh!
