Solved Error: "There is not enough free memory to run this program"

Hey there...
it all started out when i was trying to install VisualStudio 2008 C# Express Edition...
the first time i tried that it told me it couldn't access the specified registry key, so i used subinacl to gain ownership and access on keys under CLASSES_ROOT\VisualStudio*
...only the wildcard function didn't work, so it tried to modify the whole hive - and of course it failed...
when i rebooted, not only did VisualStudio still not work, but i had no sound (device not recognized or something, i couldn't have a look) and Windows Explorer basically didn't work... the whole appereance and desktop worked, but i couldn't open anything with it, it stated "There is not enough free memory to run this program", which is complete bullcrap, i had over 1.2 GB free and available...
so i couldn't even open Control Panel or anything...
luckily i was able to use system restore in the pre-boot repair options of Win 7 then - and that set everything back to normal (kudos, that went as it was supposed to be for once)
...and never touched VisualStudio again - till lately

i tried the exact same thing again :banghead:
i thought maybe all the updates i downloaded could have helped... yeah fat chance -.- or maybe NOW there was a simple solution out there...
and i thought i could always use system restore if it went wrong - naive me relying on windows -.-
this time it did NOT work, it stated it couldn't unpack all of the restore point due to too little free disk space - so it ended up doing nothing at all :sa:

i used the way better SetACL to gain access to pretty much all of my registry, to maybe solve some accessing-errors, but... nah... that didn't solve anything
(it DID work though, VisualStudio can now access the registry apparently, now i get another message saying "object reference not set to an instance" when i try to open a new project of any kind - but that's a differend story... -.-)

and now i'm sat here, with some kind of paging or memory management error, with no sound, no Windows Explorer (i'm using Directory Opus for browsing anyway), and i can't log on to MSN, and some applications won't run at all either, due to supposedly not enough free memory...

i have to say, it's NOT just me, hundreds of people have experienced the same problem in the first place trying to install VisualStudio

who can tell me what to do that does NOT involve a clean reinstall? :(

i'd feel stupid if i wasn't so happy it's working again : D

i checked and reapplied several times: System, Administrator and my user account all had access to CLASSES_ROOT and it still wouldn't work...

now i tried something i considered silly and of course grasping at straws - i reset the accessibility for "Benutzer" (german for Users) to full as well - i thought, as i'm the only user IN here, i would have taken care of all the user accounts that mattered - apparently not >.< : D

and THIS resolved all the problems - as weird as it seems (to me that is)
_____________________________________

so if you experience problems like
-No Sound (device not even recognized)
-Windows Explorer won't work correctly
-you get the error "There is not enough free memory to run this program" when that clearly isn't the case
-You can't log on to MSN

it is likely you have a security conflict in your registry - that much i knew
but the solution seems quite simple after all:

Make sure that System and Users (and just to make sure maybe Administrators and your account name too) have more or less unrestricted access to the registry hive "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\"

to obtain that, you could try and make yourself the owner of that branch first, say okay, and in a seperate step, set the permissions after you're the owner.

but chances are you get loads of "access denied" errors and the whole thing aborts (classical windows -.-)
then, and only then, for Windows 7 32bit i recommend SetACL Command Line-Version (SetACL.exe) – Syntax and Description | Helge Klein | Home of SetACL (NOT subinacl - that made everything worse for me)...
(if you're not sure how to configure, you can ask them, as of february 23rd 2011, they're active and replying to questions, or just ask me)

...can i mark this as solved somehow?

:o oh my, THAT's not something you hear every day : )
Yes, i try my best to do what i would wish from others, like to keep people updated... it is so often that you read things like "i'll ask somebody else or support center" and then that was it, people so often just abandon their posts and leave a huge questionmark standing there in the forumscape -.-
: ) as for the writing skills, i'm bound to do my best as a german, of course i want to maximize readability and logic as i'm speaking a foreign language - and i guess that pays off : ) - sorry though for not using caps... it's just something that somehow developed into a bad habit when writing more or less informal things on a computer

i hope my solution finally helps others : )

...i'm still having problems with installing VisualStudio... if i don't succeed till tonight, i think i'm gonna open another thread for that one - it wouldn't belong in here, would it? : )

so thank you again for the nice words : )

Hi, there. I've been having issues that align with the ones Metallicart had listed (i.e. no sound, error message stating "there is not enough free memory to run this program"), but I can open explorer. However, I can't open "My Computer", "Control Panel", "My Documents", "Recycle Bin" and who knows what else. When I try to, I get that error message.

I recently installed subinacl to get flash to install. And that's the only thing I can think of that could have caused the issue. I had no problems before I installed that.

I'm working on a newer Dell with 4GB of memory, 32 bit, Windows 7 Professional.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you.

My first suggestion would be to use a restore point to go back to before you installed subinacl, that should effectively get rid of it.

If you do not have a restore point just uninstall it. Then go to the link metallicart recommended and use that.

i recommend SetACL Command Line-Version (SetACL.exe) – Syntax and Description | Helge Klein | Home of SetACL (NOT subinacl - that made everything worse for me)...
(if you're not sure how to configure, you can ask them, as of february 23rd 2011, they're active and replying to questions, or just ask me)
If you still have problems understanding ACLs send metallicart a visitors message (a VM)
or just ask me

It says that there's not enough storage to complete the system restore... I know I have plenty of storage. I also can't uninstall it because it's not saved to my desktop, and I can't access my control panel. I'll shoot him a message.

Did you go to: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery, and open System Restore?

You do not want to create one now you need to see if you have any earlier ones stored.

Not to sound redundant, but I cannot access Control Panel. It gives me the error message when I try. So I simply search for "system recovery" and went that route. Thank you for your help, by the way.

Have you tried Safe Mode? Do not forget to check the Advanced options at the bottom of the tutorial.

If you get this rolling with metallicart you should start a new thread since this one is solved, but it would be nice if you left a referral link to your new thread.

Have you tried metallicart's solution in post #4? If that does not work I would suggest starting your own thread, and make sure you offer a more descriptive explanation as to what your machine is doing.

A new thread will receive the full attention of the Forum, rather than just the four members here. You will be surprised at the quickness of a response, instead of waiting eleven hours, some may have already stopped their subscriptions to this thread.

I see you have added some of your System Specs, but you could enhance your System Specs. An easy way to do that is here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Not Enough Memory To Open This Program

I was having the same problem as you. I found your solution to make sure that "All Users" was activated in the Registry, and BINGO! -- my system is working perfectly again!! Thanks so much,

i'd feel stupid if i wasn't so happy it's working again : D

i checked and reapplied several times: System, Administrator and my user account all had access to CLASSES_ROOT and it still wouldn't work...

now i tried something i considered silly and of course grasping at straws - i reset the accessibility for "Benutzer" (german for Users) to full as well - i thought, as i'm the only user IN here, i would have taken care of all the user accounts that mattered - apparently not >.< : D

and THIS resolved all the problems - as weird as it seems (to me that is)

so if you experience problems like
-No Sound (device not even recognized)

I realize this thread is over a year old but I wanted to give this person credit where credit is due. I spent 6 horrible hours trying to fix my PC. Nothing I tried worked. Some solutions I tried gave me partial access. For example turning on the invisible admin account in command prompt safe mode worked, but nothing else worked in that configuration.

I tried registry cleaners, virus scanners, and anything else I could find to help me with my problem and nothing worked. It was indeed a security permissions problem with "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\". I caused this error myself trying to get rid of the MS Office infinite configuration error and I followed the steps from one of their "techs". Bad move let me tell you.

The solution called for applying security permissions to that registry folder so of course I did it for myself as an administrator thinking the same thing you did, that this would work and it didn't. Once I added all users to the security permissions my computer was once again functioning like before.

Thank you so much for figuring this out you are my hero! I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
