Hi I'm getting an error when trying to install Windows 7 and Windows 8 from an external cd/DVD drive on my Samsung Laptop.

When in the "where do you want to install windows?" step I get the following error:
"Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1. (show details)
When I click on this it shows:
"windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
When I click next it shows:
"setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."

I have tried going into DiskPart in the command prompt and wiping the drive (which took many hours) but I am still getting the same error. Can anyone help me please?
Thanks.

I don't think I have a UEFI BIOS but I can't be entirely sure as I don't know how to see if I have got one.

Have look at your MOBO manual/specs.

Boot into BIOS setup using the key given on first boot screen, look under BIOS Boot order priority to see if there is an EFI Boot disk. If it's present and you want to continue using EFI mode then install per Theog's tutorials. Otherwise remove EFI Boot Disk from BIOS boot order, set DVD drive to boot first, then HDD. Look also for a Legacy BIOS setting to enable. These will be explained more specifically in your Manual on the PC's or Mobo's Support Downloads webpage.

I don't have a EFI boot disk. The following devices are in my boot order list:
1. USB CD: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GP20N
2. AHCI HDD: P0-WDC WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0
3. USB KEY: N/A
4. AHCI CD (which won't read discs): P1-TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-T633
5. USB FDD: N/A
6. USB HDD: N/A
7. PCI BEV: N/A

BOOT tab settings:
Boot Device Priority (as mentioned above)
Numlock: OFF
Enable Keypad: BY NUMLOCK
Summary screen: Disabled
Boot-time diagnostic screen: Disabled
PXE OPROM: Only with F12
Brightness Mode control: Auto
Wireless device control: Always On

MAIN tab includes:
System Time
System Date
SATA Port 1: WDC WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0-(PM)
SATA Port 2: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-T633C- (p
CPU Type: Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4
CPU Speed: 2.10 GHz
Total Memory: 4.96 MB
Slot1 Memory: 2048 MB
Slot2 Memory: 2048 MB
BIOS Version: 06LH
MICOM Version 06LH

In Advanced tab settings include:
Intel speedstep: ENABLED
Legacy OS Boot: Enabled
Large disk access mode: DOS
AHCI Mode control: AUTO
EDB (execute disable bit): Disabled
Internal lan: Enabled
Touch Pad mouse: Enabled
CPU Power Saving mode: Enabled
Fan silent mode: Auto
USB S3 Wake-up: Disabled
UsB charge in sleep mode: Disabled
Battery life cycle extension: Disabled

I have been able to install Ubuntu as an operating system, however this doesn't really help in any way.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals, Boot into BIOS setup to see if there is an EFI Boot Disk in BIOS Boot order.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick, at first screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SEL DIS 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CONVERT MBR
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT

Next click Install Now to Clean Install Windows 7 to partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail

Thank you for your help so far. Unfortunately I am still receiving the same errors:

When in the "where do you want to install windows?" step I get the following error:
"Windows cannot be installed to disk 0 partition 1. (show details)

When I click on this it shows:
"windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

When I click next it shows:
"setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."

Can you install from USB flash stick, setting HDD in BIOS setup to boot first then booting the stick via one-time BIOS Boot Menu key? Create the stick from Steps 1/2 in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Reset BIOS to defaults first: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS. Set SATA controller to AHCI to try install. Confirm again the HD is detected in BIOS.

I'm not clear why you tried to create a partition when the commands I gave you should have wiped the HD, created and formatted a partition and marked it Active. Try them again.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

It's a mystery why you have a Legacy BIOS setting but no EFI Boot Disk - is it possible you're missing it? I would even read the Manual on PC or mobo's Support Downloads webpage to be sure.

I have already tried booting from a USB stick but I still get the same errors.

I didn't try to create a partition, the partition showed up in Windows Installer, and it came back with the same error.

The Laptop (Samsung Q320) didn't come with a manual. And I have looked on the motherboards support webpage which didn't show of any EFI Boot Disk. Although, I am not sure if I looked at the right motherboard as I don't know how to find out the motherboard's model.

In the case of an OEM PC you'd look for the Manual on the Samsung Support Downloads webpage for your model.

Did you try to run Samsung Factory Recovery from the key given for it at boot or Recovery Disks you made when you set up the PC? It will be too late if you've already run the Clean command.

Where did you get the Win7 installation ISO and how is it burned to DVD?

It's not clear you ran the Commands I gave you earlier to clean, format a partition and mark Active. Did you?

Yes I ran the commands you gave me earlier.

The original HDD had obtained a fault, so I replaced it with the same model last year.

Are you reinstalling the same way you did to the replacement HD then? What is different?

I'm reinstalling the same way.

I recently downloaded Windows 8 which I burned to a disc. I booted from the disc. When I reached the same step I'm stuck at now, I formatted the drive, thinking that I had to do this to install Windows as it wouldn't pass this step when I originally tried it. After formatting the drive I received the error as mentioned previously. So, I tried to reinstall Windows 7 from the disc that I had previously used when replacing the HDD, and still received the same error. And now I can't get rid of this error.

Try the latest official ISO for your licensed version burned to DVD using the tool in Steps 1/2 in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps you should be following to get a perfect OEM reinstall.

If it fails try the same tool writing ISO to flash stick, set HDD first to boot in BIOS setup, trigger stick by tapping HP ESC boot menu key at boot, look for it under USB, Removable or HD's.

Yes every command.

Yes I ran the commands you gave me earlier.

Can not be both.
