Ethernet Connection Lost (and Found?)

Possibly Norton, MBAM and/or the simple tcp/ip service.

Keep running without the router for some time to continue testing so you can be completely sure it is your issue.

After some time if it's still great, let me know and we can work on making your router well too.

Will do I really like Norton 2010 I know there are doubters but it's a much better product then years passed ;)

I've done the fixes and will continue to test without the router to make sure.

Since going directly into the cable modem I've had 0 problems.

I suspect this will work great. The wired connections on my router work great but Win7 does not play with my router (linksys WRT110) worth a darn. One of the support people on the Microsoft forums actually posted that Win7 does not work with "some routers".

That's a shame. Anyone recommend a wireless router with some wired ports that works well with windows 7? I was looking at a Linksys WRT54GL but it isn't on the compatible list :(

Me, I'm looking at the Netgear WNDR3700 - initial reviews are great but it may be more than you're looking for.

Gentlemen, Start Your Buying: NETGEAR WNDR3700 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router Reviewed

Of course, that doesn't help me one bit when i try to connect to a wireless hotspot that doesn't have an "approved router".

IMHO, if Win 7 doesn't adhere to established wireless protocols that have been out there for years they should fix their issue rather than making an entire generation of routers obsolete.

I doubt the router is incompatible. Networking is networking, under any OS. It's your adapter that has issues for whatever reason.

Running latest firmware for the router is always good, problems or not. Besides, updating the firmware will also set to factory conditions. What you guys want to do.

Solution that fixed the issue for me: add the primary and secondary dns of your router in the properties of your ethernet card, and disable the IPv6.

Don't forget what I told everybody. The AutoTuningLevel of Windows Vista & up is not well managed by old linksys routers. So, yes, networking is networking, but features can be added that some equipment are not aware of.

If that's a concern, then you can disable autotuning. The router doesn't manage anything here. It's the other way around. Windows tunes to the conditions of the network.

torrent,

I tend to agree but I've seen two posts on the Microsoft forums indicating that Win7 is not compatible with some existing routers;

-----------------------
Welcome to Microsoft Windows Forum.

As D-Link DI-524 router is not compatible with Windows 7. I suggest you to get in touch with D-Link DI-524 router manufacturer for the best support. D-Link DI-524 router compatibility with Windows 7.

Hope this information is useful.

Method 5:
Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:
Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756 (How to back up and restore the registry in Windows)
Windows 7 cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
To resolve this issue, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows 7. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

Hope it helps.

So, it looks to me like Win7 is the issue for quite a few people. Either that, or these existing routers have been violating the 802.11 standard for years and no one noticed - I don't think so....

I've tried every solution that I've seen proposed, including upgrading and downgrading my adapter drivers with no success. I've been using wireless for a looong time and never run across anything as pervasive as this.

Torrent,

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt.

The bigger problem is that I do about 50% of my work at various wifi hotspots and I've run into many that I cannot connect to at all while others in the room are running fine. The issue is larger than just getting my network to run. I'd really love to find a simple driver or hotfix that would resolve these issues - I REALLY don't want to go back to Vista.

As I said, sounds like an adapter issue instead of router.

Torrent,

I hope it's that simple. The PC is about a year old and had been runnig great prior to Win 7 installation. As you mentioned - networking is networking - so long as everyone adheres to the standards.

The adapter is the Intel 4965AGN and I have installed the "Win 7 Compatible" drivers, they don't seem to work any worse than the others.

So I've got my setup working *mostly* with my router now. However certain sites time out for me now.

IE: 110mb.com I get the message "The server at 110mb.com is taking too long to respond".

If I ping 110mb.com I get "General failure".

Suggestions?

Update: Figured it out Malwarebytes "IP Protection" was blocking certain sites with no notice. Lame.

Nevermind, problem solved. For the record, it had nothing to do with the Realtek chipset.

By the way, HP makes a nice, affordable Intel chipset Gigabit PCI-Express card called NC112T that Win 7 has the driver for.
