Solved Excel 2010 Problem?

Maybe not excel directly, maybe windows problem. (Dual monitors, right monitor #2 on right, where I have excel open) IF I am on a cell and want to format that cell, I right click and choose format. The format window will open under the cell that I want to format. The problem, if that cell is in column A for example, the format window will open but the format window will center the screens, (1/2 on monitor #1 left, and 1/2 on monitor #2 right) Is there a way to keep the whole window on one screen, prefer the active excel screen???

I don't know if I am on the right track here to help you, but have you tried selecting 'Extend these displays" which allows you to drag one copy of Excel to one monitor while keeping the one you are focusing on, on the other monitor.
While on the Desktop right click your mouse & select resolution, which will open a window that allows you to select various monitor options, one being "Extend these displays".
I use this option quite often when working with a few Excel worksheets at the one time, particularly if I want make sure one sheet has exactly the same format as the others, but has varying data in it.

This is what I am talking about. The monitor #2 on the right has the excel sheet full screen, to the left of the row numbers is monitor #1, my desk top. The format cell window is in the middle of both monitors. Since I have 1/2 inch frames on the monitor's the middle is missing from view. This part does not show in the pic.

If Excel is suddenly being split after cell formatting so that it now has half on one screen & half on the other, then it may be a graphics card problem.
How have you got the monitors connected. Is one connected to your graphics card via the DVI connection & the other via the VGA connection or is one connected to the HDMI connection, or does your graphics card have 2 DVI connections.
What happens if you turn the LH monitor off, does it still do it then.
Also what happens if you select "show desktop only on 2", does it do it then.
I have listed these just to go through a process of elimination to possible try & isolate the cause.

I too have this issue, would really like to know why it does this and if it can be fixed.

Not to HJ but @Ranger4 - I tried what you mentioned; turn off left. Still does it.

I have 2 monitors which I assume is exactly what you have & I do not get that problem when running Excel, but I am using Office 2013 Pro. Perhaps that is the difference, but I can't really see that this is the case.

You could try updating your display adapter drives from the appropriate website that suit your graphics card.

Also right click on Screen Resolution from the desktop & check that the setting are correct for your monitors. I have mine set for "landscape" in the Orientation box.

Try searching help from your graphic adapter program as well.

I think this problem is somehow related to your settings as the problem just should not occur.

I have included a screen shot of the settings I have for the dual monitors. This is from the window you get from right clicking Screen Resolution from the desktop & selecting it.
I have them set in this shot to "Extend these Displays" as you can see.

Could be the difference, I have dual monitors (Dell U2410) connected via HDMI. But the difference I see is that your right monitor is the main whereas mine is the left as my main. All drivers are updated to latest. Just weird

Hi AirPower4ever, what happens if you select "show desktop on 1" or "show desktop on 2" select from "Multiple displays" as shown in my screen shot. Does only having Excel showing on one screen in either of these cases cause the screen to alter.

I notice that you have both monitors connected with an HDMI cable. Does your Graphics card have 2 HDMI connections or are you using one from the Graphics card & one from the motherboard. As you have probably noticed from my earlier post I have one monitor connected to VGA & the other to the DVI connection, both on the graphics card.

After a lot of testing in various monitor configurations using Excel I have found that in fact I do have the same problem. So I apologize if I have given the impression that I did not have the problem. I just had not experienced it before. :o :o

There are 3 ways to work around this problem.
1. In "Screen resolution" select "Duplicate these displays" which will give you an identical image on each screen. You can turn off either monitor to save power if you wish.

2. "Extend these displays". Load your worksheet on the active window & then click on the Header Bar IE. the top bar of the spreadsheet & drag it across to the other monitor. This will reduce the screen size so just maximize it again. You can now work on this screen normally. This option is very useful if you want to have 2 different spreadsheets open at the one time, one spreadsheet being on each monitor.

3. "Show desktop only on 1" or "Show desktop only on 2". This will only have one monitor working, so it is virtually the same as only having one monitor. You can turn the other monitor off to save power if you wish.

I hope this helps by providing a few ways around the problem.

OK, now I know I am not the only one :-) back to the original question. It seems like the format window is relative to the cell that is to be formatted. (below and centered on that cell) for the most part. I do not know if there is an "option" to keep the format window within excel's border. i.e. If I insert a clip art, even though I have A1 selected, that clip art will remain within the border. I looked at options ad nauseam, just do not see anything. I do a lot of excel @ work and when working near the border, I have to constantly move the window to see all the options when formating etc. I would want it to remember its last location so to speak. :rolleyes:

My initial problem is with Win7/64 Excel 2010. Just checked on my Win8/64 Excel 2013, it behaves the same as expected.

Hi meebers, I don't know of any option to keep the format window within the border as you describe.

Can you easily use one of the options I listed in post 10. It does possibly mean working with only one screen in some cases but it does get away from the format window problem in the extreme LH cell columns.

Hi meebers & AirPower4ever I have found a very quick & easy solution for the format window in Excel. Instead of right clicking on the cell & selecting format, select the cell & use Ctrl+1. This drops down the format box around the centre of the screen.

You are correct. Also discovered that if you move that box on the screen, it will remain there next time Ctrl+1 is used. :geek: Thanks for hanging in there with me!!!

As an added note, I like to have 2 sessions of Excel open at the same time, one on each screen. Makes data transfer/copying etc. easy. Second session opens while holding the Ctrl button and select Excel again
