Solved explorer crashes

lve been having some issues with explorer crashes, its an annoyance lm having on two different setups (laptop and PC), this time lve caught messages through the event viewer on my PC.

this is the following event:

Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7601.23537, time stamp: 0x57c44efe
Faulting module name: MSVCR90.dll, version: 9.0.30729.6161, time stamp: 0x4dace4e7
Exception code: 0xc0000005

seems to be the same each time it happens apart from the obvious timestamp differences.

l should add the crashes seem pretty random, while l notice them most often while browsing folders, lve had one or two happen while browsing, the latest happened while opening anysoft video converter.. and l have run a SFC scan which found no issues.

Did you do a check disk chkdsk c: /f and sfc / scannow ?

Check device manager for problematic devices (yellow).
Does it happen in safe mode?
What antivirus you are using? Try to disable it for a while.

Also list installed software. Run a copy of free Portable Geek Uninstaller

Save a list of programs to file and zip the file and attach it when you post here.

all devices are fine an up to date, well the wireless could use updating, but the newer driver is pants.. makes my net run at a snails pace.

l doubt it will help disabling the virus software, l had one or two crashes before it had been installed. but its pretty strange that two different sets of hardware seem to suffer the same issue. if l could work out what the issue was then ld have no more issues.. tho l will note l still do get freezes opening certain video files, but unlike before they are too short to notice thanks to 32GB of ram but that issue prior to this install had been annoying me for years before my last PC, but l digress, all l have read up on the issue so far mentions corrupted c++ runtimes, right click context menu options or random files causing it which ppl have had to remove using the command prompt, but its getting to the point that lm doing something random explorer.exe crashes then closes all my open folders (tho l have had one or two crashes where the folder l happened to last open didnt close with the rest a couple of times when l happened to be browsing my file system).

tho generally my issue happens once per boot, today would be unusual in the fact lve had two explorer crashes since my last boot which so far works out as one today and one yesterday, tho l can go days without one between boots.

just looked at said thread, lm assuming by creating a backup of said key l can uninstall by re-running the reg file l previously saved?

just adding the file for the uninstaller prog you suggested, restarting.. next will be the logged crash.

In theory you can just delete the LocalDumps key and subkey to undo changes but a backup is always a better plan.

It just creates an entry to produce explorer specific crash dumps and place them in C:\LocalDumps

It doesn't actually do any harm to leave the registry with the new entry once created though.

You might need to reboot before you see any explorer crash dumps and Windows Error Reporting service must not be set to "disabled"

if it doesnt harm to leave it then l may just leave it there, but l may set the error reporting service to manual after l get a crash. when l next turn on my laptop l'll do the same thing and see if its the same issue. tho if another bsod happens l need to post that because last one didnt create any dumps for some reason as l dont remember running any cleanup programs.

still will post a dump file as soon as l experience my next crash (which may take a few days or more to experience as they have been totally random).

Thanks for the list. I don't see any programs that are known to cause explorer crashes.

lol, love those two progs, l pay the bills on behalf of my parents so safehouse program has been a good way to keep their financials safe even if l do loose the thumb drive.. best program l ever found that and being able to disable the caps lock means less mispresses and caps where l want them LOL.


l was thinking the same thing about the GWX control panel but l keep on forgetting to uninstall.. then again its a pretty small prog, leaving it just means if in the unlikely case something does show up again trying to make me go 10 l can stop it lol.

*sigh* still waiting for the annoying crash to happen.. could be hours or days before it happens again, thats why this issue is so annoying.

finally had a crash of explorer.exe (happened to be managing files at the time) have attached dump file, will leave the reg entry there and collect another crash dump after this one (that is unless this one provides a pretty obvious solution to the issue).

Looking at the dump now. It will take 5 - 10 minutes to see if it offers anything useful.

Okay it indicates a problem.

1) msvcr90.dll

Suggest - install and update MS Visual C++ Runtime. Could you list versions as show via GeekUninstaller?

so its C++ runtime related?

attached what l see.. what do you suggest l do? uninstall all? then reinstall? if so it would be useful to be directed to the safest place to grab them as l dont think l was offered these through MS update, its possible some were bundled with software l use. (been reading suggestions both 32bit and 64bit runtimes should be installed on a 64bit OS could that be part of the issue)

That just looks like the standard set that you get via windows updates. I would suggest uninstalling them one at a time using GeekUninstaller including the "scan for leftovers"

Then if you like you can use UVK (installed or portable) to reinstall them in one go.

Important: Forgot to mention that you need to reboot after uninstalling VC++ versions before installing them again.
