Explorer.exe high memory usage

I have a fairly powerful quad core PC with Win 7 but even at idle Explorer.exe runs at around 30-50000, total memory usage over 50% (total 2gb) before i even start opening any apps.

My Win 7 PC at work for examle which is nowhere near as powerful runs at less than this with several Office apps & others open.

Something is not right - can anyone offer any help as nothing I see on the forums seems to give any answers....

Your level of RAM usage is fine. Leave it alone until you have a real problem.

hi there post a snipit of resmon and have a look in the task manager at the processors like mine in the pic

I do have a problem with the memory usage as when I go to use something more intensive such as Pinnacle Studio the PC simply cannot cope with it & virtually locks up when doing a simple action.

The state of things when idle is just a start...

RAMMon is an easy to use Windows based application that allows users to quickly retrieve the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data from their RAM modules. It will allow users to identify a multitude of attributes, of which, includes the manufacturer, the clockspeed and other data of their DDR2, DDR3, XMP and EPP memory devices and even some older memory types. It uses SysInfo DLL SDK to gather the SPD attributes from RAM devices. This information provides a snapshot of the available data for each RAM module installed on the system.

What is SPD?
Serial Presence Detect (SPD) is the standard set forth by JEDEC for a host system to retrieve attributes of memory modules. The SPD standard is intended for use on any memory module, independent of memory technology or module form factor.

RAMMon displays the values stored on RAM module such as the memory capacity, the manufactuer, serial number, model part number, the CAS latencies supported and the module voltage.

Also, depending on your RAM type, other specific SPD data can be retreived as well. Such as the module thickness, module width, maximum operating temperature and more.

Fair point, however it states on the MS site that 2GB is the min for Win7 64bit.

Maybe I'm being simplistic but my dual core PC that I use at work (not sure of spec but its somewhat less than mine) with 2GB of RAM is infinitely faster than my own - I use Word, Excel, IE8, Outlook plus at least 2 other SW packages and it still runs faster than my home PC when idle!

Plus when I first installed Win7 I wasn't getting this problem - I know Windows degrades over time but this is a bit too much - its the explorer.exe which eats up the most. When I use Studio now the memory goes through the roof which it never used to do either, and when I do use Studio I shut everything else down to give it the best chance.

if you have a spare thumb drive with at least 4GIG on (reformat it to fat 32) you could use that for readyboost that will help

your cpu works with the ram if you are using high memory usage programs it will not cope the processors do not have enough memory so windows wont run the program proper it will freeze so to speak look at the post on readyboost this will help a bit for now a ram upgrade would be best though.

i understand your thoughts i have some spare ram in my tool box and if i could send it through cyberspace i would trust me more ram more power for memory your results below

Many people have reported this problem and various people have suggested solutions but there are no clear answers. The SOLUTION I found is to create a new user profile and login to it and transfer your files and settings to it. If it is a Domain joined computer then just clear the locally cached user profile to re-create it and you should not experience the runaway memory leak of explorer.exe process from jamming up your computer.
