Solved external drive HELP need please

This may be a permissions issue. I've had this problem myself, and right clicking the drive in My Computer, clicking properties, going to the Security tab, clicking Edit, and adding Users to Group or user names: fixed it for me.

Edit: Group or user names: Administrators, SYSTEM, and Users should be listed for the drive to work.

when i right click the drive i cannot see a security tab in the drop down?

If you are running with an administrative account, it should be there. If it is not, and you are running from an administrative account, your only option may be to use the iCare Format Recovery link I gave you. Just make sure you restore the drive's contents to a different drive than the drive you are restoring from.

The security tab will not show up in a drive that is not setup as NTFS. I am guessing the data will have to be recovered using software to recover it to a different drive than the one the data is being recovered from.

I don't know what the issue is. But, I have 2 external Seagate drives. Both came formatted NTFS, so unless he changed the format they should be formatted that way already. He has already tried icare in post#5. Frankly, I am not sure what the problem is, I am just trying to force the drive to accept a drive letter. If that can be done, we should be able to find out the problem and fix it.

Can he access the drive through the command prompt in Administrator Mode? Sometimes this works, too. I guess he would have to have a drive letter for that, too. I will see what more I can find, as well.

He can see the drive in diskpart, but it wouldn't let him assign it a drive letter. Just for a shot in the dark, try going back into diskpart and select partition 2 and try to assign it a drive letter. It appears that partition 1 is system reserved and is protected, so maybe partition 2 which is where the data should be will work.

right i`ve got a drive letter assign but still no joy with opening it, still asking to format the drive.
one other thing i just tried using ubuntu but my keyboard gets disabled when i go to use it, any ideas on that?

Did you try unplugging your keyboard and plugging it back in?

Have you tried the partition recovery software in my previous post? It has been known to fix the RAW drive issue in Vista.

this doesn`t work on the drive i get message at the bottom saying `Dynamic disk,GPT disk and bad disk are not supported`

Have you tried TestDisk? TestDisk Step By Step - CGSecurity

TestDisk looks a bit complicated for the average user. You could try installing the partition recovery from Free Partition Recovery Software - MiniTool Partition Recovery is a Free Partition Recovery, Active Partition Recovery, Deleted Partition Recovery, Windows Partition Recovery, Disk Partition Recovery, NTFS Partition Recovery tool. and see if this helps. I tested this, and it seems like it is hanging during the scan process, but it actually is working. May take a couple hours to run on a large drive. Took about a half hour on my 40 GB drive. Just don't cancel during the scan if it looks like it is hanging because it is actually running.

I'm still here too. I thought if we got a drive letter assigned, it would make it recognize the partition. Guess I was wrong. It appears writhziden is having better ideas than me. Hope it works, but I will be here and try to help if I can.
