Solved External Hard Drive missing

I'll be buying on EBAY. I will avoid Seagate. I'll look for a reasonable Hitachi. I'm not sure if you are the same person I was chatting with earlier, but my funds are limited.

Thanks for all of your help

On this thread it was only you and me, LOL. I would not buy from eBay. Go to Amazon, that is a lot safer and more serious. Look for a 7200 RPM disk.

Amazon.com: 500gb hdd

Hi,

It seems the problem originally started with the snapping of the USB port on the Hard Drive. If the hard drive is detected in the Device Manager you can assign a drive letter to it without formatting it. You can try doing it to as a fix. Check the below mentioned link for details:

There is a software by the name "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard" this can help you recover data in most of the damaged (not physical) Hard Drive Scenarios. You can try using this software but in your case as you reported there was a physical damage so it is recommended that you seek a technical expert to assist in recovery or choose a data recovery company to recover as much data as possible.

You can read about "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard" and also download it from the below mentioned link:

Thanks for joining in. There was no physical damage. It was just gone yesterday. I did already try renaming the drive. It doesn't seem possible to access the drive for recovery efforts if I can't access the drive????? It holds my backups. I think I should just buy a new one and start backing up again.

That sounds like a good idea. Because if it is physically damaged, there is little you can do. That's why I always spread my backups over 3 disks.

So I was going to buy the Hitachi Touro as it was supposed to be better than Western and my searches for Hitachi kept coming up with HGST. I looked it up and found this interesting information

HGST, Inc. (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Digital that sells hard disk drives, solid-state drives, and external storage products and services.

I guess it's like other electronics where they have different brand names at different prices , but are all only made by a few companies.

And before that, Hitachi acquired IBM disk drives.
As far as i know there are only 3 PC disk drive manufacturers now: Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba.

Yeah, that acquisition by WD is new. But as David said, there are only few real manufacturers anyhow. And the plants are mostly in Thailand.

Thanks for sticking with me all day yesterday. Back in the day I used to be good at "fixing" my computer problems. Now there is so much to know and I haven't kept up.

I have purchased the Hitachi drive on EBAY . I have complete confidence in EBAY I have bought and sold there for many years. Besides, I have credit there....hahahaha.

Bye
