OK, got a new HDD (WD Black..)

Anyway, went to install Win7 Home on it. Partitioned the drive (gave myself a 100 gig partition for OS) but didn't format the partition.

Hit Install... It ended up hangin for almost an hour at 1% and then 3% unpacking files... So I restarted thinking i had to format the partition first (seemed odd it took that long).

Now the drive won't boot on it's own (bootmgr doesn't exist error) and if I start up with my old HDD OR the Win7 disc it can't find the new HDD at all :(

Is there some way I can make it recognize that HDD?

I hate Windows now, it's official.

Is the HDD detected in BIOS setup? If not try reinstalling it, change cables, test the HDD using maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

If detected try wiping the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from installer Command Line accessed by pressing Shift + F10 at first screen when booted, or System Recovery Options.

Close Command Box, click Install Now, use the Drive Options to create and format one install partition. Ignore the small boot partition created. Click Next.

If install doesn't proceed, try prepartitioning the drive after wiping it again using Step 2.2 from SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation.

If all fails test the HD with maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan. It may be a bad drive.

thnx , will try and report back

Well, Bios and post screen both detect the HDD.

But Win7 instal disc, Windows 7 on my original HDD and WD disk tool don't detect it at all.

So it's bad?
This will be like the 3rd WD disc I've had to warranty in a year. They work great IF they work at all. What a joke.

Do you have WD Data Lifeguard DOS bootable CD to run Extended test? The last I found it was not posted on their site. In that case did you run the Windows version from your old WIn7 HD on it?

You can also run the Seagate Seatools DOS CD Long test though it won't do repairs, or Partition Wizard surface test

I did, when I tried diskpart (with win7 install disc in) no drives showed up at all. I just get a list of commands (rescan, etc..).
When I tried diskpart with only my working HDD in I got the same thing. Now Hdd list like in the picture.

------
oh maybe I did that wrong, not an 'elevated' command prompt, but I don't think there is a choice from install disc, maybe I'll try tomorrow with working HDD and new HDD plugged in.

I asked you about the WD disk which you said you ran on the HD. Was it Data Lifeguard. If not I listed others to test the HD.

This determines with certainty the HD condition.

Wow, I must've read another reply or something because yours above does not look familiar at all.
I thought you simply asked if I had tried all the above steps... (did you edit it?)

-----
Anyway.

With my working (and new NOT working) HDD installed I used WD Data Lifegaurd tool and it only showed my good HDD and a usb stick)

The new HDD didn't show up in the list at all.

I don't have any tool on a disc, didn't see that at WD website.
-------
I'll look at the other tools, but am sceptical about the partition wizrd one becasue that shopws the drives in the list you can test and nothing except bios and post seem to be recognizing the drive at all.

I'd want to test it with a boot disk and not just from Windows, since it's seen in BIOS setup.
