This is my first thread.. sorry for my bad english
Yesterday I tried making partitions in my hard disk, and I failed

Here's what I did:
1. run compmgmt.msc
2. Shrink C: drive
3. my hard disk' capacity shrunk from 451GB to 260GB
4. an error window appeared ("I/O device error" I think)
5. it left me no unallocated space to create partition

using compmgmt I can't extend my hdd back to 451GB, so I used MiniTool partition wizard to restore it (btw, shrinking with MT PartitionWiz resulted the same, no unallocated space)

So how do I solve this problem? thanks in adv.

How did you use Partition Wizard?

If you downloaded it and installed to to your hard drive, and then tried to use it, the operation will most likely fail.

What you need to do is download the ISO and burn that to a CD then boot into it rather than Windows.

When you're done, you just exit from PW and boot back into Windows.

I forgot to ss it, in the volume list, my hard disk capacity becomes 265GB, while in graphical list (below), it's still 451GB, nothing changed..

I did install it to my hard drive, and my computer restarts after using PW (not with compmgmt)

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow :)

Test your HD with maker's diagnostics/repair extended CD scan: HD Diagnostic

Then run a full Disk Check.

Please run Disk Mgmt again to post screenshots before and after the shrink operation: Partition or Volume - Shrink

While the bootable version of PW is recommended always for safest partitioning operations, you need to fix the problem your describe if it repeats using Disk Mgmt.

Welcome to Seven Forums. Click the :orb:, Right click Computer, them manage. Click Disk Management in the left pane and post a snip of that window. Here's how: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html#post93869

Sorry for the late reply, now I can't seem to shrink my HD (diskmgmt became unresponsive a moment after I click "shrink")

and I heard creating partition may result in data loss? If so I prefer to have no partition rather than losing my files (again)

What are the results of the HD diagnostics extended CD scan, followed by Disk Check?

Can you try a similar operation using on another HD, to eliminate Disk Mgmt as problem?

Either way, run SFC -SCANNOW Command to check System File integrity.

There is no real risk of file loss while shrinking to create using Disk Mgmt or free PartitionWizard bootable CD, but you must back up your files anyway. I would do this before doing anything.

haven't done diskcheck yet. I'm not sure about hd diagnostic, I downloaded seatools program, and my drive passed all the tests

as for SFC - SCANNOW, a window popped, saying "You must be an admin running a console session in order to use the sfc utility"

On the cmd.exe, right click and select Run as Admin, then it will work.
