"Failed-Virus scan failed" error when making downloads on chrome

I have actually been getting this error for the past month, at least since March 29th. I've made several attempts to work around it but to no avail. It appears that there is an error with the other browsers as well. I have searched for solutions for this for several weeks, none of which fit my problem. I uninstalled my clamwin antivirus in favor of Windows Security Essentials, though, most people have fixed this problem by messing with AVG? I don't think I have AVG on my computer?

Anyway, if someone knows how to solve this problem please let me know, I'm willing to try anything.

As the title suggests, I can't download anything. So I cannot download CKScanner without getting the same "Failed - Virus scan failed" message.

Can you boot in safe mode and try downloading the suggested files? If you have access to another machine, download the Kaspersky rescue disk here:

Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

Follow the instruction for burning the ISO to CD or USB stick and boot your system to the rescue disk with internet access. Perform a full scan, after the AV definition has been updated.

Let me ask you some questions, please be truthful and don't be offended.

1. Is this your own, personal computer?
2. When did you download and install MSE? Does/did it update and work? If so, did it quarantine any viruses? What was the name? ( look in MSE's Quarantined file)
3. I don't understand this ---> "I don't think I have AVG on my computer?"
Was it ever there and you uninstalled it?
5. Is this an original purchase from a retail store with Windows 7 installed , or was it bought from a '2nd party'?

"Virus Scan Failed" Solution... For Me

I was plagued w/ this same download problem in Chrome, but also in IE and FireFox too. Tried everything. Nothing worked until I did a thorough AVG2013 uninstall including AVG in my Start Menu, registry keys, Program Files AVG directory folder removal, etc. And voila, the downloads keep on coming!

Thinking back, this whole Win7 DL problem started when upgraded to the new AVG2013 engine. I've decided to go w/ Avast! free version for my anti-virus protection.

Actually I had the same problem. All browsers delete files after downloading them. I read, after searching, somewhere that the browsers are trying to use Windows Defender to scan the file, but Defender was missing from the system. So I checked my computer, and could not launch Defender and the icon was broken.

I copied the Defender folder from another PC, which could download fine. This fixed the problem with the downloading. Now the browsers do not show any error.

But on launching Defender now, even though the downloading is fixed, Defender says : Service is stopped. When I click 'Start Now', it says : "The specified service does not exist as an installed service.". I cannot turn on 'Windows Security center service' from the Action Center either. It is missing from Services.msc.

Is all this because of the above mentioned "Zero access virus" or could it be some windows update / installation bug?

Also, sfc /scannow stopped at 91% saying 'could not complete'. sfcdetails.txt was clean!!. sfc/ verifyonly found 'integrity violations', but again sfcdetails.txt did not show anything of help.

If is zero access virus, try Rogue Killer, it solved my problem.

I used trial version malware software solved it once last time, but the same problem returned after the malware software expired and I uninstalled it...

I figured out that I able to download it using bit Comet which I installed before I get the virus.
