Hi there. Am working on a PC with win 7 Professional that was infected by the CBT Locker virus. The threat has been removed, and the PC has been cleaned by Virus scanners and Windows Restore. However, there are still two files with a 'bad' extension left; they are user files. So system restore would not affect them. One has a .zip.hgmbsei extension; the other has a .jpg.hgmbsei extension. Both are files needed for the functioning of this utility PC. I tried to simply remove the hgmbsei extension from the jpg file, but it didn't help. Windows still cannot 'read' that jpg file afterwards. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The files were most likely encrypted. You will need to replace those two files with their original version.

I guess because those files were encrypted with the locker virus. No way to retrieve them without decryption keys as far as I know.

This is why backups are so important.

Is System restore enabled? If so, try Shadow Explorer, it allows you to browse Shadow Copies which contains all files on the hard drive, not just system files. You may be able to copy restore the files from there.

Thank you all. Both files pertained to a specific program. After some search I was able to find some original install disks and replace them. I am fortunate it didn't do more damage.
