Solved File record segments unreadable, then booted up what do i do now?

Hi all,
I am a complete noob with computers. Earlier today, i turned on my computer but it froze at startup, so i powered it off from the external power button and restarted. After it booted up the second time, PC tools firewall plus said it had been tampered with so i tried to run malwarebytes anti malware, but it wouldn't start and my start menu froze. So I powered it off externally again, and this time it booted up to a black screen reading "Checking file system on C:. THE TYpe of file is NTFS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency." Chkdsk started and at least 10 record file segments came up as unreadable. It looked like the process would take a while so i went to get my phone to document it but by the time i came down it had already finished that portion and had moved on to deleting things (sorry for the vagueness but i didnt catch the process) with $ in front of things. Finally, windows booted up albeit kind of slowly and with faint beeps and now my computer is working fine as far as I know. Im running avg scans right now.

Sorry for the long post. My question is what could have caused this? How cAn i prevent it? What should I be doing right now?

Hi, thanks for replying!
So today when I started up my computer CHKDSK automatically ran again but came up with no bad file records and deleted some index entries.. What does this mean?

I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with Seagate so I haven't done that yet.

I did however run the MiniTOol Partition Wizard and came up with 1 error on my C: Drive.

What's the next step? Also, could a virus have caused this problem?

What error was reported by Partition Wizard? Can you give us some more detail?

All it says is "Surface scan complete. 1 errors found." The surface test didn't further describe what this error was, it only said that it read an error in the block

OK, thats probably some bad sectors on the disk. Download and use CrystalDiskInfo to get a better picture of the health of the disk:

Yes as Golden the one error is probably just a very tiny spot on the platter so is insignificant really if you had say fair sized patches of red errors then it would be not good.

The Seagate (and I don't want to thread on Goldens toes) just download it and run.

@ICit2lol sorry to ask another dumb question but should I be running fix all fast, slow or something else?

@Golden I was having trouble with AVG detecting crystaldew as a threat so I haven't used it yet but I will update once I have, thank you

Alright so with Crystal Disk I have a Health Status reading "Caution" due to 22 uncorrectable sectors and 6 pending sectors. Is that bad?

With SeaTools, I failed Short DST and Long Generic but passed Short Generic. Should I run Fix All Short or Fast? I read that it might kill the hard drive totally so i'm worried about that.

To be brutally honest mate I would get a new drive and if you have image or some form of back up install the OS onto it because it looks to be failing by millimetres.

This can be done with this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 just make sure you have the correct version and retrieve the data form the old drive you want using a USB / SATA gadget. See pics

I concur. All indications are that the drive is busy failing - it is impossible to tell how soon it will fail permanently. Replace the drive immediately.

Aw, that's a bummer.
One last question though: Could my hard drive failing have anything to do with viruses? I've been running scans consistently and nothing has come up, but just wanted to make sure to not repeat the same mistakes in the future.

Oh also, what is meant by backup? I've backed up the files and pictures already, but does backup mean literally everything about the computer like programs and settings and such?

The failure is due to a physical defect on/in the disk - not malware.

Backup means all your user data - music, photo's etc. etc.
