Is it possible to connect 2 laptops - one windows 7 the other xp to just share files. I've done this with 2 xp laptops easily with a cat5 cable.

We are downloading pictures from a camera to one pc and need to then transfer to the other. There's no internet involved.

What would be the best way to do this? I can't get it to work with the cat 5; crossover seems to involve the internet, usb uses transfer software and isn't what I need. I just need to copy over images from a shared folder from one laptop to another.

Thanks.

Easy to do if you have either a "null modem ethernet cable" also called a "crossover " cable.

If you are going through a router all you need is a regular ethernet cable.

Are you using "homegroup" to network these two or just file sharing?

I haven't gotten anything to work yet. Have been reading tons of posts to see what's the best way. The 2 xp's used workgroup. I didn't think homegroup worked for xp. I was hoping to be able to do something similar.

Workgroup should work for both and is more stable with legacy systems.

Have you gotten any error messages?

hat happens when you plug the ethernet cable in?

Have you rebooted both with the ethernet cable plugged?

no errors. Haven't rebooted. Can't ping. The w7 pc shows public network/unidentified network. I'll try rebooting and see what happens. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Firewalls, malware apps?

run ipconfig /all on both and upload the output for us. TIA

XP wont run IPv6. You should disable it on the win 7 machine.

ok, disabled IPv6, pinged and instead of timed out, get destination host unreachable. Here's the ipconfig for the w7 pc with IPv6 off. Is there some other configuration I should check? All firewalls are off. Should I go get a crossover cable?

nope. Right now the w7 laptop is connected wirelessly to an at&t router. But I'm trying to set these two laptops up for an event. I can use a router if I need to, but was hoping to be able to connect with just a cable like I use to.

Direct connections need a null-modem or cross over cable.
