Finding appropriate USB port for installing Windows

Hello all,

When a PC has several USB ports and if I want to install Windows (XP or 7) using a bootable USB, first I should configure the BIOS to boots from the USB port but then, into which port I should put the USB flash? Or how can I find that USB port that the BIOS will boot from it?

You can use any usb port. But why not use the one on the front of the pc.

Yes, my intention was to use one of the front ones. But it couldn't recognize my flash. Are you sure that each one can be usable for installing? In the BIOS there are more than one USBs to configure to boot from.

Is this a new custom built computer ? Are you sure the front USB ports are connected to the MB properly ?

Maybe give of some more detailed specs on this system.

What do you mean by MB?

Usually front USB ports have wires or cables with wires inside that lead to a place on the MB (Motheboard) where the are plugged into the USB Header on the Motherboard.

How do you know the flash drive is bootable, who prepared it ? How was it prepared ?

Yes it's fine and I have used it several times before.

I don't know, but anyway, it's possible that the front ports have flaw.

Then just use 1 on the back, then tap the proper key to bring up the boot menu and see if the drive shows up.

The specs in your post, sound like a old WinXP PC.
Some old WinXP PC's, will not boot from a USB Pen Drive.

But the Computer is apart from that OS which sites on it. Your meaning is, since my system specs are some old so it can't boot from USBs?

You need to make the USB bootable first, using an confirmed official ISO with the MS tool or another reliable tool like UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive.

Then set the HD first to boot in BIOS setup, reboot and tap the key given on first screen for Boot Menu (had you given us the PC or mobo model we could tell you what this is) to look for the stick under USB, Removable or HD's - you may have to expand (+) a listing to see the stick which is normally listed by name.

If it doesn't load when you select it try another writing method like Ultra which always works.

If it doesn't show up confirm the stick is written correctly by trying to boot it in another PC. Check in BIOS setup that Legacy USB and USB boot are enabled.
