Short version

MBO:Asrock X58 Deluxe
Proc: i7 920 (not OC)
Mem: 6GB triple-channel
Win 7 Build 7229 (x64) - clean install the day after it appeared in the wild ;)

Installed FF (32-bit), pinned it to the task bar. Some sort time later, the Icon changed. Uninstalled, re-installed. Didn't pin it to the task bar. Some sort time later, the icon changed again. Installed the update (from 3.0.10 to 3.0.11) See the attached images.

Anyone have any idea of what is happening here and how to fix/prevent it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also - forgot to add that in the above, I added the "noscript" add-on. Could that have been the issue?

Hello Scott,

Sometimes changing the icon of the shortcuts in the Start Menu for these to the same default one a few times will restore it again.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Workaround

In the mean time, I made a copy of the firefox.exe file and used it as the default browser. It may have problems in the next update, but is an immediate solution.

When you make the copy the icon get restored, but if you erase the old file and rename it, the icon get lost again.

You have to open firefox with the copied exe.

I've since done a clean install (7600.16384) and installed FF 3.5. I've not seen the behavior since.

So, for me the problem appears to be solved (at least for now :D)

You also need to clear the thumbnail cache for the larger icon views when clearing the icon cache for Win 7, this can be done easiest by running 'Disk Cleanup' ('cleanmgr.exe') and ticking 'Thumbnail Cache'. ;)

not sure why & how but the missing icon reappeared on its own after few boots.

Icon again gone missing, seems its playing hide n seek.

As suggested by anistar, I deleted the thumbnail cache & that got my icons back, hope it stays like that now.

I had this problem and fixed it like this:

1. Click on Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox. Right click on Mozilla Firefox and click on Properties.
2. On the Shortcut Tab click on Open File Location.
3. Right click on the Firefox icon (that looks like it is supposed to) and drag it to your desktop - create shortcut there.
4. Unpin the Firefox shortcut from the task bar and delete any incorrect Firefox icons from your Start menu.
5. Right click on the Firefox icon on your desktop and pin it to your task bar, and to your Start menu if you so choose.

yes the above steps works
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:

CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT
8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
9. cleanmgr.exe
10. cleanup drive c:
11. tick thumbnail for delete and press ok
12. now when cleanmgr delete the thumbnail open Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
13. and type explorer.exe its 100% works

We've had this suddenly happen on all our images.
We're using x64 Enterprise edition.

You'll notice, if you open the shortcut properties > change icon, it'll refer to %programfiles%/mozilla firefox/firefox.exe
Of course this location doesnt exist, because FF has been installed to %programfiles(x86)%/mozilla firefox

Deleting and recreating the iconcache.db didnt work, so our workaround was to create the %programfiles%/mozilla firefox folder, and copy/paste only firefox.exe to there.
It wont run without errors, but thats ok. It only needs to pick up the icon, which it does now.

Strange, deleting icon and thumbnail cache did the trick for me.

@xarden, your solution worked for me with some modifications. Actually, I was using FF4.0b8 and when I ported to b9, I changed the folder name from to "Mozilla Firefox 4.0" in %programfiles(x86)% folder. I have two shortcuts for firefox in start-menu for a personal and default profile. The application targets are {"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4.0\firefox.exe" -p "personal" -no-remote"} & {"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4.0\firefox.exe" -p "default" -no-remote"} respectively, which resulted in lost of icon (after couple of hibernates!!). Now, I changed the Icon location (for both the icons) to " %programfiles(x86)%\Mozilla Firefox 4.0\firefox.exe " and the icons are back. So for x64 users, no need to mkdir and copy firefox.exe in %programfiles%.
[Incidentally, at Firefox Nightly Builds there is a built for 64bit too, but it appears to me, Mozilla's update is not pushing the proper versions to clients! Or is it an unofficial third-party release (on official site!)?]

I had this problem too in FF3 (3.6.17 but I'm pretty sure it started with an earlier version). Deleting the icon cache didn't work, and while I've come across solutions that involve changing the registry, I didn't want to do that myself. However, I found that it was solved by uninstalling and reinstalling, as follows:

First, take a backup of everything using MozBackup. Then uninstall FF3, selecting the option to completely remove personal settings. Then reinstall FF3, but without creating a new profile. Close it, and restore the old profile with MozBackup. After this the file icons were as they used to be.

One thing to bear in mind: the profile in the new installation has a different name (the seemingly random sequence of letters and/or numbers) from the old one, so if you have any backup programs etc which refer to it you might need to change their settings.

After this I actually upgraded immediately to FF4, and the icons stayed as they should be. It might have been possible to simply install v.4 without putting v.3 on again, but in my case, one of my add-ons (a viewer for the family history site Ancestry) apparently can't be installed from v.4, but will continue to work if it was in v.3 which is then upgraded.

In case anyone is wondering, I had first tried upgrading FF3 with wrong icons directly to FF4, but this didn't solve the problem. It was only the uninstall/reinstall that worked.

Hope this helps others who don't like changing the registry!
