lve looked around but found allot on similar issues but not my specific issue.

long story short is firefox hangs when l start it up.. not sure if its windows 7 or just something to do with an update.

its only started happening the last couple of days, all l have to do to create the issue is start firefox up and for maybe 5/10 seconds the browser hangs as a white page with just the title bar along the top before icons and the search bar shows up. the only thing l have installed is CCleaner which was just before it started happening (by maybe a few days)

lve done a little testing like disabling addons, cleared temp files, and history which l admit lve not cleared for a good year.. but the problem is still persisting, opening new windows while the program is active seems to be ok so its just when it starts from scratch.. in any case l guess its no biggie if l dont find the issue as it could be random and may not affect if l reinstall, which l intend to do over the next 4 weeks at some point (been installed for a year so its worth an occasional clean l guess) but l must admit it would be nice to know what the problem is if it should return again especially if someone has some interesting ideas on what it could be.

If you close Firefox down and then go to the event viewer. When in the event viewer-- wipe all of the log history in each category. Once done, leave the event viewer open and restart Firefox. You will either see messages in the event viewer which confirm your suspicion that Firefox needs reinstalled or something more interesting. Who knows, maybe your computer's hard drive just needs a defrag :/

yeah its the latest version. however l may have tracked down the issue.

the strange thing is l disabled all the addons already however l decided to use firefox safe mode and disabled the addons there instead and then enable them one at a time.. once all the addons were disabled firefox started fine, after enabling addons l found that Flashgot was the culprit.. but what l dont understand is that nothing has changed or updated since before the problem started so lm confused as to why the problem started when nothing is any different than before it started.. apart from the fact l cleared cache, but only when disabling addons through safemode firefox and enabling one at a time did things become apparent.

still lm glad l worked out the issue tho l still intend to reinstall my OS in the next few weeks before l go away, usually do once a year to keep my comp running well.

My opinion on firefox any more is CRAP! I used to be almost religious with it, but any more it just seems like any type of add-on you use causes it to crash and reset to home page. I trashed FF and went to the newest Google Chrome, the apps store has a lot of really nice ad-ons as well as some neat little games to play. I am not having any more crashes like FF used to give me, I'm not having to wonder is this page going to load or crash, I'm not googleing to find a fix for a crash that occurred because of a FF incompatibility issue any more. All my problems seemed to go right out the door after I removed it. Remember this just my opinion based on my factual findings and actual experiences.

I would use google chrome but it uses to much ram, for firefox I just run the older versions and tweak the settings in about:config to my preferences and don't update it. Lately FF has been trying to keep up with IE as far as being an overweight pig. LOL! Honestly the more newer the versions the worse it becomes almost like some bad conspiracy...

@timeless, perhaps the issue occurred with Flashgot because of an update of that extension. I assume you have extensions set to automatically check for update?

I am very happy you solved the issue! :)

Hi, krokusnat. :)

I guess that is a subjective opinion. I find the 4.0 betas to be better than ever. Even with 4.0b9pre 64 bit I have no crashes. I'm not a big extension user and it's blazingly fast.

Discussing various browsers is always like discussing one's favorite football team with a fan of a rival team - passions always run high.

Who are you picking: Oregon or Auburn? ;)

lve heard good things about the beta, and while l do have the occasional crashes firefox has served me well.. couldnt do without some of my addons as they make life so easy, lve also found that running noscript and adblock plus has kept me pretty much virus free for years which has been a bonus.

as for the beta, if l remember correctly it uses hardware acceleration? which lm looking forward to seeing but lm waiting for addons to be updated before l contemplate it as l couldnt do without noscript, adblock, and FEBE (FEBE for those that dont know is a backup tool for extensions and other user data like boomarks and settings which makes reinstalls a breeze which l set to auto backup and verify once a week.. l also make sure l have 5 backups so l always at any one time have a month and a half of backups just in case one doesnt work)

as for chrome, l know ppl who use it but lve not cared to try it as from what l have seen its too minimalistic for my liking, tho firefox only gets bloated when you add too many addons but lm not really worried about memory usage as l have plenty of ram to spare since l dont even use a 3rd of my 8gb.

Yeah, timeless, the betas (4.0 FF to be) use hardware acceleration as do other browsers these days.

If you want to try your add-ons with the betas, get the Add-on Compatibility Reporter and you can, at least, try them out. You'd be surprised how many work splendidly with the FF4 betas. Also, if you have an add-on that doesn't work, go to the add-on's web site and look for a development build. I'm running three development build add-ons (betas on beta ;) ) now and they're working great.

The thing that I'm only bummed with and hopefully soon this version will become non-beta I guess is the term that I'm looking for cause it is fast and looks great but my addons like fast dial, download themall, Bazzacuda and Browse Images are necessary for my enjoyment and ease of uses for what I use firefox for.

@mikedl what development add-ons are you using and whats the url for these?

Edit: Duh! just read what you said up above^^^in your post lol what a moron!:D I will
give it a look...

Thanks in advance

Regards

Krok

Hi timeless I got a few of mine to work by forcing them to install with an add-on called "nightly testing tools" it allows you to test the addons by forecing them to install instead of firefox telling you you can't. You just configure the add-on to let you do it...my Browse them works even though it said it wouldn't. Bazzacuda didn't fair so well so I removed that. Flashgot works regardless I haven't tried download themall yet though so we will see how it fairs since I prefer it over flashgot...

these are the current addons l use:

1. UpdateNotifier -- Notifies you when updates are available for your extensions and themes.

l must go through and delete some, but havent got around to it, but as long as 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, and 18 are known to work l might give it a try.

(btw this list was obtained through FEBE as it give an information page when things backup completes.)

If you are running the betas of FF, please use the Add-on Compatibility Reporter to test your add-ons.

I did that as well mikedl and reported them along with a description of the issuse that weren't working download themall failed the test.

@timeless that's a lot of testing but if you do it the faster firefox developers will solve the problems with the ones that don't work, it's a good effort to engage in for all. ;)

By the way if you want timeless go into your iew on the folders menu and unhide your hidden folders. I make a backup of my old firefox by going into user\appdata\roaming\mozilla and copy the whole mozilla folder to my desktop or something-it contains all your plugins and everything before uninstalling your old firefox...Then when you fnd that you may not want the new beta everything will be safe if you decide to reinstall your old version....or just use FEBE lol
