Folder and Win7 standard icons missing?

Hello there!

Recently I've used Hyperdesk (Hyperdesk: The ultimate desktop themes for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, skins, icons, wallpapers, widgets, desktop themes for Disney, Pixar and Star Trek, themes for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and more!) but eventually disliked it and uninstalled again. Since then most of my standard Win7 icons are missing/not showing up.

I tried rebuilding the icon cache with tutorials posted on this site = no luck.
Also tried a restore point, still no luck.

Have attached 2 screenshots for you :)

Any ideas?
All else is running smoothly and I don't really want to reinstall all Windows just because of a few icons not showing up :(

Welcome aboard :D

If still not fixes (I guess so), see post 4 and post 5 of the thread Help! - How do i restore default icons? .

Post 5 is much easier option, IMO .

Hyperdesk, Alienware and Stardock Iconpackager ......

If you install anytime, and later plan to uninstall , first apply the default windows icons, and then uninstall. Otherwise these programs will screw your imageres.dll file up :sarc:

Rebuilding icon cache or SFC /scannow command is not able to fix this problem. Coz the icons are no longer present in the system .

Other than the fixes stated earlier, one more thing can fix this problem successfully, that is
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html .

So be cautious next time, and best of luck :)

Oh! How did you find this info regarding Hyperdesk? I skimmed through there forums and couldn't find anything useful...

As for Post #5 in that one thread, in the description it says:

"This will only work for WIN7 BUILD 7600 X86 (32bit)."

Since I have x64, no chance I guess :(

SFC is still running, will wait until it finishes and look for the rest then.

Cheers again! I rarely stumble across a forum with such helpful responses or any at all :D

Ok , here it is : imageres.rar

Go to syswow64, and take oenership of your existing imageres.dll and rename it anything like imageres.old, and the place the supplied one there .

Now delete thumbnail cache and rebuild icon cache , and restart your computer .

After restart, if it still not working, delete thumbnail cache and rebuild icon cache again .

EDIT : Change the 32 bit imageres file in system32 folder , too, from the link in post 4 of http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/148413-help-how-do-i-restore-default-icons.html, too .

Nope, still the same. :(

Here's exactly what I did:

Took ownership of both imageres.dll in system32 and SysWOW64 folders.
Replaced them with your .rar files (renamed the originals).
Rebuild the icon cache and deleted thumbnail cache (in that order).
Restarted the machine.
Nothing changed so I rebuild the icon cache again, deleted the thumbnail cache again. Restarted again (don't know how often I restarted now...) But same result :(

One thing I noticed is that all folder icons on the desktop show up right but it's only the Windows Explorer that shows missing icons, like in the screeshots I posted in #1.

Maybe it's not the imageres.dll but another resource file in Windows? Or are all icons in that file?

If still doesn't work, my bad  I have solved a number of similar issues in this way , but there is only one easy option left after that , that is Repair Install .

I hope you have a installer disk ?

Already did as one of my first steps, didn't help :(
I'm still wondering if it's not the imageres.dll that's the problem?

One more question .... do you use Service Pack 1 or not ?

If your system is not of SP1 (might be) my files from SP1 may not work . In this situation, I will search for a non SP1 system file .

And that is why we request to fill the system specs up properly :)

Let me search for the non sp1 system files , if any of our users have it, we will get it .
