Font panel audio not doing as it should with VIA HD audio deck

I recently changed my case and MOBO to a G41M-Combo (Intel). Ive never used front panel before due to not having the option on my sound card. Now that i have this new MOBO it has on board HD 5.1 so im using that to save room on pci slots.

I have the options set to notify me when 3.5mm is inserted and the same for front panel, and also have set redirect headphone and to mute speakers when inserted.

When i insert my headphones to front panel, I have no notification and speakers dont mute. Also the port doesnt light up to indicate its in use and the sound is extremely quiet.

Ive tried all i can think of. I have newest drivers, checked bios settings and played around with audio settings with no joy.

If anyone has any ideas and can help id very appreciative.

Is the front panel lead connected to the correct header on the motherboard and is it in the correct orientation?

Are you using the chipset and sound drivers from Intel? If not, that is the first step. I have an Intel motherboard and have to use the Intel provided IDT sound drivers for my integrated audio to work properly.

There are two separate front panel sound connectors for my front panel audio on my case (an Antec), AC97 and HD Audio. If you have two, make sure you are using the HD Audio connector (and cable).

Despite HD audio being well-established, there are few cases that have a front panel that is fully HD compliant, and instead is only AC'97 compliant (these use the same principle as earphone/headphone sockets on portable radios). Such a panel will work, but it will not provide the necessary signals to the audio circuitry on the motherboard to mute speakers attached to the rear panel (only an HD front panel can provide these signals).

You don't state what case you have, but, as fireberd has stated, many HD front panels come with 2 plugs for the motherboard header, and you use the HD/AC'97 one as appropriate. Just for reference, my case (listed in My Specs) is fully HD compliant.

Firstly thanks for your replies.

Since posting i have come to believe that my front panel is not HD as stated in the manual and on the packaging, but just AC97. Although very disappointing I will over come this small problem with either trying to find a HD front audio or purchasing a USB headset.

The only other concern is the low level volume that actually comes through the jack. I will continue to use the front jacks for the time being. So if anyone has any suggestions for this id be grateful.

P.S. I'm using skull candy headphones. Not really for gaming but doing the trick until i get some new.

Damn this forum registrations are getting difficult. But ok I'm here now. The last couple of days I have tried to fix this problem. On the internet I have searched for a full solution. This solution is not the AC97 solution. I have an HD audio and boy I want to use it! So the AC97 solution is no solution for me. What is the solution?

Yes these are old drivers for the VIA HD audio deck. It will fix your front panel problem. You have to configure the mic options and other things but it works fine. If you need any help plz ask here. I have searched for days now to fix this. I know your feel.

Somehow someone at VIA thought "hey lets **** up these drivers for older hardware" that's why you have these problems with the newer drivers.
