Found KB974431 reliability update had failed

Hi!

I was checking my updates, and found KB974431 a reliability update? Had failed

I tried to follow the instructions here:
How do I work around error 800F0902?

So I uninstalled it, looked for the reset tool in step four, and became frustrated when the "this does not apply to your version of windows" box showed at the top of the page because I can never find the page that is supposed to apply.
"Why doesn't MS have a click-able link to my version" instead of just going to win 7 help?

I never did use the "readiness tool". I went back to windows update, and preformed an automatic check for updates.
It found I needed KB974431, and this time it installed successfully, but I still have it listed as failed also.

• Would it hurt to leave it that way or should I run the "reset tool"?
• And should I find, and run the "readiness tool"?

I realize that I would have to remember this SNAFU.

Yes please run Readiness Tool,this will create CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.Log attache to post

We'll try from another way:

It found I needed KB974431, and this time it installed successfully, but I still have it listed as failed also

1.Go to Control Panel>>Troubleshooting>>System and Security>>Fix problems with Windows Update
2.make sure data & time is correct both in OS and in BIOS
3.Reset Windows Update http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html
4.Reinstall Windows Update Agent How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer
5.Uninstall all 3p security software
6.Try also this advice Error Code 800F0902 on several Windows 7 64 bit updates
7.Try also this trick:
Install this update,when it require to restart computer,boot computer in safe and then finish installation

NOTE:In safe mode/safe mode with networking Windows Update doesn't work (you cannot start to install any updates),however you can finish to install updates in safe mode,if it was initialed before in normal mode.

8.Run cmd.exe with elevated previlliges (right click on cmd.exe and choose "run as admin") and type:

takeown /f %Windir%\System32\sppcomapi.dll
takeown /f %Windir%\System32\sppwinob.dll

icacls %Windir%\System32\sppcomapi.dll /deny *S-1-1-0:F
icacls %Windir%\System32\sppwinob.dll /deny *S-1-1-0:F

net stop sppsvc
net start sppsvc

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe>nul

9.I googled and found lots issues with installing this update,this issue could relate to any error with activation,although in Control panel>>System probably everything is OK.

Run this tool if really nothing help Genuine Microsoft Software

Recreate Licensing Store:

Run cmd.exe with elevated previlliges (right click on cmd.exe and choose "run as admin") and type:

net stop sppsvc

//Sometimes Software protection service may not be running -it's normal//

cd /d %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

cd /d %windir%\system32

net start sppsvc

slui.exe

After a while Windows Activation will appear,it may ask you to reactivate/reenter product key or sometimes Activation may occur automatically

When you will reactivate system try again to install problematic update

Hi Flavius,

My apologies for not getting back sooner. I haven't been able to apply your solutions, and I really have not had any ambition to even work with or even be near our machine this past week.

I am recovering from a recent ear infection that had a Cholesteatoma repair three years ago. (Tympanic repair with Mastoidectomy) And just yesterday we received word that my Dear Wife's brother is gravely ill. When it rains, it pours, eh?

When I started our machine today, it reported that updates were available for review. I did so, and allowed all.

Five out of the six installed successfully one failed.
It asked if I wanted to retry, and I said yes.
On the second try it installed successfully.

Other than this occasional glitch.
The patch back in August, and now four successful patch dates later until this most recent, the machine runs okay.
Until my wife, and my world calms down a bit I'm afraid I will go with our flow before trying to concentrate again on this update problem.

Hi Flavius,

In the fortnight since I last posted I have been keeping an eye on my updates, and have not noticed any abhorrent behavior.

Windows Update has faithfully checked for updates once daily, and on November's patch Tuesday identified three updates, one critical, one important, and one optional. It downloaded, and installed all successfully.

I have no explanation for WU's earlier behavior.

Independently what was it -If there is no problem with any update then problem solved itself.Hard to explain earlier WU behaviour - maybe WU installed any other update which fixed your bug...nevermind
