Hello everyone

This weekend I upgraded my acer Aspire M3641 from windows Viste 64 bit Home Premium to the Windows 7 version, through an upgrade disk.
The upgrade went wel, however since then my computer has been having problems that frustate me to the point of considering putting vista back on, which ironicaly enough has never given me any trouble.

The problem: my computer freezes randomly. It doesn't freeze everything: My internet connection disapears although there a good signal from my router to my wireles USB adapter (sitecom 300N xr). Also, i can open up any application (word, excel, etc) and it wil open properly, but as soon as I want to do something in the app it freezes in the app too. Also I can't shutdown properly: after pressing shutdown, it sort of freezes in the final shutdown screen, and after 10-15 minutes, I get a BSOD, after which it restarts.

at first, i just restarted the computer by holding the start button, after restarting everything was fine again untill the next time the problem occured.

Just to let you all know what I already did: did the windows update and installed all that came with that, installed the only driver Acer had on their site for this edition (realtek HD audio), and installed the newest driver Nvidia had on their site.

however given the BSOD it still seems like a driver issue

at the top is states: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

further at the bottom I get

*** STOP: 0x0000009F (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8005F1E440, 0xFFFFF800044E8518, 0xFFFFFA8003EC0C60)

Anyone have any idea? frustration is killing me guys

Upgrading was your first mistake. Users usually experience problems later on, but it's good it happened sooner.

I suggest backing up your files, and doing a clean install, following the tutorial below:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

If the problem persists, post back and we will help you out,but generally this clean install should set you straight, and let you Experience the full power of Windows 7.

alright i'll try that then. One question before I do: if I do this, and in worse case scenario it doesn't turn out right, does a clean install take off the Original Vista that came on the computer(what i mean is, would i be able to put vista back on if I needed to or is it totally 100% gone forever)

thanks

Your Vista will be 100% gone yes, unless you make/made a recovery disc for it, in the unlikely event of Windows 7 install goes pair-shaped, you've got the Vista Discs to put Vista back on.

Ok, I think i made that disk before the first upgrade with windows 7, with Acer e-recovery management I think. 2 dvd's, total of about 7.5 gb. That should be it I think. Ok, im going to give it a go, I'll post back to let you know how it went.

ok...got stuck at step one.

I have the Windows 7 Upgrade Media disk in the computer. When I restart, I pres F12, which brings op the boot menu. I then select the second option, (cd/dvd drive), press enter.

Then I see the 'press any button to start up from disk etc...' I press buttons like a madman, tried it 5 times now, but the computer just goes on an proceeds to start up windows as usual.

STOP 0x9F is "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".

The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE bug check has a value of 0x0000009F. This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.

In Windows XP and later versions of Windows, these errors are superseded by Driver Verifier tests.

I'd suggest that you go online and download updated drivers (preferably Windows 7 certified drivers) for your computer.

ok, yeah right now i was in the middle of trying to do a 'clean install', but like my last comment stated I wasnt able to boot from the disk, computer just starts up like usual.
Also the clean instal idea sounds like it should work, the Acer upgrade disk recomends a clean install for my model, i just did the easy thing and went with the upgrade.

But regarding your comments about the driver: where would I find these, I've done the windows update, found drivers for my video card, there are no drivers for my usb wireless adapter. what other drivers could I be missing.

just got off the phone with acer, they also weren't able to get the system to boot from the Windows 7 Upgrade Media dvd. They told me to use the back-up disk to put vista back on, and then try to do the clean install (don't see why it won't boot of that disk now, and should be able to after vista is back on, but i'll give it a shot).
Aparantly this has happened to more people with my model (aspire M3641) and a clean instal should fix it. hope I can get it done

`perform a "clean' imstll

Agree with Uber Philf

Most all of us agree that an upgrade is not the route to take. It leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.as you are experiencing now

Save all you Documents, Pictures, contacts, videos, music, etc to a flash drive,

Be aware, you will need to re-install your 3rd party applications.

There i poll going on now and "clean" install is winning by a mile,.

Go into your Bios and make sure that your DVD is the first boot option. Put your Win 7 DVD in the drive and power down. When you boot it should go to the Win DVD. There isn't much need to worry about Win 7 drivers. Between the Win 7 disk and Windows Update, you will get just about all of them.

haha you won't believe this,

i reinstalled vista, seems to have gone fine. it should be just like when i bought it, but al my programs naturally are not on there etc.

however, like I expected, it still won't allow me to boot from the Windows 7 upgrade Media dvd: after it asks me to press any button to boot from dvd, it goes on to start up windows Vista anyway

So i call back to acer, make me explain the whole thing again, she asks me to hold an a moment, 10 minutes later i get automaticaly rerouted to the main menu where the nice automatic voice tells me they're closed for the day...

The guy said something in my first call about the disk probably not being bootable, anyone know something about this, from what I've read so far I should be able to do a clean install from the upgrade dvd. And since my model (according to acer themselves) requires a clean install, I would expect it to work

I'll let you all know how it turns out, thanks for the help up till now
