Gadget bug

I posted this in customisation but I thought it better to start my own thread
Microsoft Security Advisory: Vulnerabilities in Gadgets could allow remote code execution
Do we need to run the "Microsoft fix" or has a windows update
disabled Gadgets
I still get them on boot up at times
Not sure what to do with this

I still use Gadgets. They were never disabled by Windows, but MS doesn't offer downloads anymore, nor do they support their use.

I believe, in this conspiracy-minded mode, that MS stopped offering Gadgets to entice Win7 users to move to 8. I mean, Metro is basically a replacement for them, in my mind. I haven't seen enough of 8 to know if they're offered a way to monitor the system (my main use for gadgets) from tiles on the Metro desktop.

After some more reading I decided to run Microsofts 50906 fix and disabled them.
Would be interested in some more opinions on this though

I too still use gadgets. I believe the risk to be very low. It does exiast, but has since the beginning. I think MS only reported it when 8 came out...coincidence?

I think a little different.
When Microsoft says they are a security risk on a Microsoft Operating System; I believe them and don't use them.
I believe that the warning was for all Gadgets from where ever they came from. I could be wrong about that.
A few years ago Gadgets was a favorite way for the bad people to access your computer.

It would take more than a bunch of Gadgets to get me to buy Windows 8.

That was my philosophy regarding the whole thing. I do my best to be sure I know what my puter is doing at all times, and that includes network in/out traffic. My gadget helps me do that, even though using it puts me at some risk. If I see net traffic that is out of the ordinary (or disk activity, or processor usage), then I look for the cause and squash that bug. I wish I could say the same for my wifey, but she just wants to play Second Life and doesn't have the time for this stuff.

Didn't Yahoo offer "Widgets" for a while? Seems to me they shut that program down about the same time MS stopped offering gadgets. Same reason? I dunno.

Can someone tell me if there is a parallel solution somewhere in 8? I don't use the OS, so I don't know. Like I stated above, I think that most of the things that the common user needed from gadgets were taken over by the Metro desktop (weather, news, etc...), but I haven't seen anyone with system monitoring tools out on the Metro desktop.
