It sounds like an issue with Steam. Run a repair on the Steam installation.

Check the event logs for errors relating to application crashes. We need more information really to diagnose.

Since the games actually load up it may not work but have you tried verifying game cache for these particular games? Right click on the game in steam and click properties/local files/verify integrity of game cache.
