Hi Folks
I purchased my PC just before christmas and I've been trying to get it to play online games ever since. Let me explain...
I can connect to the net, I am using it now as a matter of fact, I can browse the web, download (although there are issues, will explain) and can play games locally but when the games need to connect to the net, they can't. Now I know everyone will say:
1) Check your exceptions - I use windows firewall and defender and have made sure all programs have complete access to web.
2) Check ports - I have made sure application sharing (port forwarding) is correct even to the point of manually allowing the correct ports for each game to be open.
3) Check the router - I have went to the router manufacterer and obtained the correct settings for the software I am using including port settings.
4) Make sure the drivers are up to date - I have made sure ALL drivers and up to date and working correctly. I used DriverGeniusPro to double check this.
I used 2 programs/games to test with. The first was Valve's Steam client, and then the online game Battlefield Heroes. I figured if I could get these to standard internet game platforms going I could crack the rest.
Steam installs, but when it then goes to update it times out with the message that I need to connect to the internet. The program then closes down (Used task manager to assure it wasn't running in the background)
Battlefield Heroes installs fine and I go through the website and press the play button at which point it starts and times out with the "1002" error message which is the catch-all error. I have run though all reasons for this error (updating punkbuster manually, checking ports are open, running as admin, etc) as well as ensuring that any conflicting software is turned off or not installed at all.
And about downloading, I have used torrent programs to download, but when I am browsing they wont work and once I start the download, the browsers can't connect. I've tweaked the settings and nothing helps. This may be related to the games issue or may not, not sure....
I have posted about this here before and went through all the tips (thats how I've got to where I am today). I have contacted the software people, the PC Manufacturer, the store I bought it from (PC World in Aberdeen, unless you buy their "care plan" they don't want to know) and nothing.
Please someone dig deep and shed some light on this. I may be missing something really basic, but I have eliminated everything locally except the PC (I have also at the same time run the software on my kids pc and my wifes laptop both on the same network and running the same Windows 7 and they work
