Solved Gateway NV55C Internet speeds

One of my laptops is a Gateway N55C running Windows7 64-bit that has a Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet card. I have a Verizon Quantum Gateway FiOS Gigabit router that I get speeds of over 940Mb/s both up and down using my Toshiba laptop. Both computers are plugged directly into the router using CAT6 cable. I have updated the drivers on the Gateway, adjusted settings in Device Manager for 1000Mb/s, but am limited to speeds of less than 100Mb/s. Is it possible that's all I can hope for? Thank you for any advice.

How long is the CAT 6 cable? Where did you get it?

Thank you for your reply. Both cable runs are less than 30', but now that I am looking into this further, I see the Ethernet adapter is called a BroadCom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and unfortunately, now I checked again, the highest speed is 100 Mbps Full Duplex (set to auto-negotiate), so that answers my question. It also has a Wi-Fi adapter, Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter, 802.11 b (2.4GHz) capable of only 100Mbs. I forget this laptop is way back from 2010. The Toshiba is new.

I also have a tower computer I built years ago running Windows XP Pro 32-bit, which has an ABIT motherboard with the Ethernet connection built in. I disabled it in the BIOS and bought a TP-3269 PCI Gigabit Ethernet card. I installed it and set it to 1000Mbs, but it only goes to 100Mbs, so I am screwed on both those computers. So I am paying for FiOS Gigabit speeds for just the Toshiba laptop until I get newer computers. Sorry to have bothered the forum.

You don't want full duplex that will actually reduce speed in most cases

802.11 b is only 11Mb/s. I think is a 802.11 b/G that is 54Mb/s. There is also a 802.11 N (light=150, full=300) and 802.11 ac with up to 1Gb/s

I have a N router with a G Wireless Network Adapter. It doesn't make any difference as my internet is 25Mb/s (half the G capable) and I don't have any other computer on the network.

Thank you for straightening that out. I just assumed that it was b because of the 2.4GHz My bad. Running an Internet speed test using the Wi-Fi, I get about 60Mbs up and down with the overhead. I have no way of knowing if it is b, b/g, or certainly not n. How would I find that out for future reference? Not that it really matters in my case. I'm not about to change the hardware. Thank you for your assistance.

I suppose you used the Toshiba. If you got about 60Mbs up and down, you probably have a N wireless. Nowadays most new laptops comes with a N.
On the Gateway you should get around 50Mb/s.

The Toshiba connection is Ethernet and I get over 940Mbs up/down. I use the wired connection because the wifi stops working too frequently. A hardware problem. I never move that laptop anyway, so it doesn't matter. I get 250Mbs on my smartphone. 5GHz connection. Only get around 60Mbs on the Gateway wifi and the tower computer.
