Hi there,

New to the forum and not an expert of computer at all.
One of the latest windows upgrade KB2799494 has failed to be installed. Error code 80073712. I'm using windows 7 Ultimate x32.
Several things I've already tried (by Googling):
System Update Readiness Tool, according to the logfile CheckSUR.log there're no errors.
ran the fix it tool (several different versions)from Microsoft, didn't do anything.
SFC check showed everything's fine. (but it finished really fast, like about 10 sec)
download the update and tried to install it manually, but no luck.
clean boot, windows troubleshooter, also no luck.

Other updates have been installed successfully but only this one, and this never happened before. Hope someone could maybe help.

The error code is often caused by a faulty driver set - which also causes other errors.

We need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Your installation of Office 2007 is counterfeit - based on a Blocked Volume License Key.

The errors I was expecting to see there aren't present - so you'll have to first try a System Restore back to before the update was attempted.
see You receive error code "0x80073712" or the "Windows Features" dialog box is empty when you try to install updates or components in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista

Assuming it completes OK, reboot again, then do a Clean boot, and do a manual Check for Updates, and try the install again.
How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

thanks for the information.
About the restore, pity I don't have any restore point before the first attempt of trying to install the upgrade.
Any other thing I could try?

(How did I know that was going to be the response?? :/ )

Have a look in the Installed Updates listing - see if it's managed to get that far. If it has, see if it will uninstall.
I really don't currently have a clue how to address this problem, since CheckSUR gives me no clues.

I'll have another look through the CBS logs and see if I get any inspiration from them.

man you must be some sort of prophet :-P just joking, you must have already met a lot of similiar situations.
Checked the upgrades listing, it's not there. should I post the CBS logfile? if yes, should I run something first like SFC check, because things are pretty a mess in my computer right now, have tried a lot of things.....

Very strange SFC log, that one.
There's only 1 POQ listed, and there should be over 60.
No wonder it completed quickly.

Please make sure that you follow these instructions, then post a new log....

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

I think that's how I did before, except I didn't reboot after running the SFC check.
I did it again and reboot this time, and here's the log file. But I don't think there's any difference......What's wrong with my computer.....

You're right - no change at all.

We'll have to do it the hard way and see if it works.....

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

(example - sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=P:\ /OFFWINDIR=P:\Windows)

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

I have to go to bed now for tomorrow I'll have to get up really early (it's ten pm at my place). I'll do this "hard way" tomorrow when I have time. Hope it won't get too painful.......Thanks a lot for the help. You're exact the kind of expert I was looking for. Will be back tomorrow.

ok, I've done what you told me, it ran well under your nice instruction.
But even by "hard way" the SFC check finished really fast, took only few seconds.
And it said that no resource conflicts were found, same as before. Guess that's not a news right.....?

I really have no idea what's happening here :(
Please run the following commands separately - I only need to know the number of files and folders found at the end of each command, so note it down as you go.

DIR C:\Windows /S /AR
DIR C:\Windows\Winsxs /S
DIR C:\Windows\Servicing /S
DIR C:\Windows\Winsxs /S /AR
DIR C:\Windows\Servicing /S /AR

Please also run TDSSKiller - from Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller and post the results. (please read the instruction on the page, and follow them!)
Note any files or infections found, and post back with details.

I haven't used daemon tools for a long time and already uninstalled it years ago.......guess it just didn't go away completely.
I googled the way to get rid of the sptd service and it took me some time since I'm a rookie of computer.
It seems the sptd thing is now solved. have run the rootkit check again and all clean this time.
run the SFC check again but no luck it still finished quite fast and the log seems to be the same as before.

ok, have been searched for solutions and reasons in internet for hours, no luck.
obviously something's wrong with the SFC function and that's just too hard for me to figure out, and I still can't get that update installed, which is very frustrating......I'll let it be for now and maybe some day in the future I'll do a restore image recovery which is from 2 years ago or just a reinstallation of os......

And to NOELDP, Thanks a lot for all the patience and help, it's really kind of you being willing to hang in with me here. If you have something new, I'd be very grateful if you could let me know.
