I am about to build a new desktop, and am going to install Windows 7 Professional. My current computer uses Home Premium. What I want to know is is it possible to use a system image from Windows 7 Home Premium as a restore point for Windows 7 Professional to easily carry my programs, desktop, start menu and other files to my new computer. If not, or if it's simpler, is there another way to get the same result? Thanks in advance :D

I think there's enough difference between Home Premium and Professional to not take a chance with transferring anything other than your personal data. And it would be best to install your additional programs since it's a different OS.

Alright. I was hoping to not have to do that, since it would be much faster to copy all the files over than to download hundreds of gigabytes again, but I suppose if it's the only way, that's fine. Are you sure there's no "Transfer tool" that I could use on my LAN or anything?

Perhaps you can do your system image transfer as you were thinking in your first post & then use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. You can check this out by opening Windows Updates & on the lower LH corner you will see Windows Anytime Upgrade. Click on that & it will take you to MS so you can check it out.

What are you using to create your existing system image. I would suggest you have a look at Macrium Reflect to create you image.

The only problem you might encounter is if your existing version of Home Premium is OEM & not a Retail copy you might have activation issues, as the OEM version is tied to your existing motherboard.
